Two Sullivan Boys Killed in Battle
Two Sullivan County youths, James B. Manning and John Harkness, died in France while serving in the Marine Corps and a machine gun unit. Manning, 19, grandson of Mary Manning of Turman township, enlisted six months ago and fell on April 27 in the Picardy region. Harkness, brother of George and John Harkness of Jackson Hill, was killed on Picardy Hill when a German shell struck nearby as three men died. Cecil Stevens, brother-in-law of George Harkness, reports he was gassed and wounded in a major battle. he had enlisted in the Scotch-Canadian Rifles in Canada.
