Flatboat Craft on the Wabash Before the War
W D Hay in the White County Democrat recalls building flat boats on the Little Wabash. He describes hewing gunnels, ripping with a whipsaw, splicing ends, and wooden pins securing bottom and sides. The craft, 60 to 80 feet by 18 20 feet, were built on riverbanks, launched, and often carried corn meat furs to southern markets before steamboats reduced the trade. Profits came with partnerships, and a weighable cargo system emerged. Ride and tie originated from sharing a horse on journeys home.

Eds and Eddies Shape Riverboating History
The piece describes river navigation risks from eddies and snags that endangered flat boats. A skilled flat boat pilot could command high pay and was in demand to avoid or recover from swirling currents. Despite precautions, boats suffered damage and cargo loss, contributing to the decline of flat boats after steamers emerged. Legal action was possible against companies for tossed losses.
