A Sunday night fire in Pleasantville Indiana caused over 12000 in losses across a drug store hardware store and other shops. Investigators believe incendiaries started the blaze sparked by recent anti liquor sentiment with possible arrests anticipated.
Test wells on the Jamison and Mason farms are expected to come in Saturday as renewed activity returns to the oil fields. A state inspector is on site to oversee operations.
Merom Indiana May 1 Congress man Champ Clark a Missouri leader in renewed activity will speak at the reunion of Union Christian College former students Saturday. Gas tests and drilling progress mark several wells in Hamilton township with plans to pipe gas to the city if abundant. Local contracts move drilling to new sites as oil activity expands in the area.
A severe electrical storm Sunday night caused major damage in the county. Thomas Exline's unins ured barn east of town burned after a lightning strike, destroying two horses, hay, corn and poultry. Willriggs of Curry township lost a cow to lightning as winds damaged fences and property.
On a Tuesday at Stivers restaurant three Sullivan county residents shared a table with a combined weight of 861 pounds. The heaviest were Per ley M. Hayworth trustee Curry township at 376 pounds, George McNabb governor Gill township at 224 pounds, and Jeff Tague Curry township at 261 pounds. For details contact Mr. Stivers.
Members of the Sullivan lodge of Elks travel to Princeton this afternoon to attend the dedication of the Princeton lodge of Elks in the evening at the new Elks home.
William H. McKee traveled from the city on his way home from Robinson Illinois where he attended the funeral of his uncle Samuel Bennett a former county resident. Bennett served Civil War soldier and postmaster at Robinson under McKinley later a successful real estate businessman. He was married to the daughter of the late William L. Draper of Hutsonville.
The county reports three remonstrances against liquor licenses in Cass Turman and Fairbanks townships. Cass has been dry again for two years and six townships overall have eliminated licenses, leaving three towns to decide. The anti saloon campaign continues with ongoing challenges in Hamilton Jackson and Haddon as results loom.
A 1907 letter to Sullivan County Indiana officials urges the removal of the city hitch rack to improve sanitary conditions. It argues flies from horse manure spread disease, cites comparable towns that abolished racks, and asks the county board to issue a formal prohibition.
Charles Wells a 45 year old Black man in this city drank carbolic acid at the Manuel home on South Section street and died within 30 minutes. He had threatened suicide after family troubles and had previously attempted poisoning. a note blamed his wife and a certain colored man.
Washington reports the Postmaster General has approved a detailed adjustment to rural free delivery carrier salaries. Effective July 1, the schedule increases pay by 9 to 25 percent based on miles, rising totals by over 6 million dollars and an annual rural service expenditure near 35 million dollars.
Dr Charles H Edwards of Sullivan has sold his office and residence and transferred his practice to Dr J Brian Maple of Shelburn. The move came as a surprise. Edwards plans possible future locations in Terre Haute or Indianapolis. Maple, a Shelburn physician by training, will make this his permanent home. Edwards will stay in Sullivan for about two months.
Lola Kinworthy, long missing near Carlisle, has been located Tuesday at Terre Haute in the home of Mrs. C. Greenup where she has been employed as a domestic. She returned to her home Tuesday. The Sullivan town enumeration by Arthur Rose is nearly finished and is expected to show about 1000 children, slightly above last year.
