Grant becomes lieutenant general during Red River actions
In March 1864 Grant is named lieutenant general by Lincoln and meets Meade at the Potomac. Banks’ Red River expedition under Smith advances to Fort De Russy, after heavy bombardment and a bold assault, with Farragut‑style river operations and gunboat support. The campaign aims at Shreveport as part of a broader move toward Mobile, with Banks reassigned as plans shift to Sherman’s Georgia drive.
