Golden Wedding Anniversary Told by Sullivan Pioneer
The fifty year marriage of James Russell McKinley and Nancy A Gobin is celebrated at their daughter Mrs Cuthbert Sherman’s home. McKinley recalls Sullivan county’s early days, railroad arrival in 1853, first streets, churches, a 1854 drought, flat boating, distilleries at Carlisle, and the town’s development. He helped lay out streets and watched Sullivan grow from a swampy site to a bustling center.

Cuba Seen Through American Eyes in 1905 Letter
Chaney and White editors publish a Cuba dispatch by C. H. Stratton from Havana dated February 15, 1905. Stratton praises Cuba as fertile and promising, notes long cane fields near Montanzas, cites currency confusion and a mix of Spanish and American money, describes narrow streets and carriages, Jai Alai games, bone-bone graveyard practices, and Cubans’ favorable view of Roosevelt and US annexation hopes. He warns readers to avoid American grafters and predicts Cuba becoming a garden spot with US capital.
