Deserting Private Hewitt Recaptured in Carlisle
Private George A. Hewitt missing from Camp Sheridan Alabama was arrested at Carlisle by Marshal Virgil Booker. Hewitt escaped from Booker's residence while handcuffed and was later identified as a teamster from the 45th Supply Co. He gave Marengo Illinois as home and said he registered at Amite Louisiana. Military authorities at Camp Sheridan had wired Booker to hold him.

Raymond Evans Sentenced for Linton Ticket Office Break-In
Raymond Evans of Dugger confessed to breaking into the Southeastern ticket office at Linton. He was arrested Saturday night and brought to Bloomfield Monday morning by Sheriff Moss. Evans pled guilty before the judge on Tuesday and was sentenced to Jeffersonville for a term of two to fourteen years.

Mrs Fannie E Ridge 74 a well known Sullivan resident died last Wednesday afternoon at the home of Ed Newsome. Widow of James Ridge killed 23 years ago by a gravel train on the old I I S Ry. Native of Kentucky she moved to Sullivan as a girl and reared several children including those of her late husband and Ed Newsome. Funeral held at Christian church Friday conducted by Rev John McD Horne burial at Center Ridge cemetery.

Cass Township Man Guilty Of Heinous Crime
A jury in Sullivan County circuit court found Jesse Greenway aged 59 of Cass Township guilty of sodomy under a grand jury indictment. The trial ended Friday with deliberation and no sentence yet pronounced by Judge Bridweill. The charge involved mistreatment of his 12 year old granddaughter Rose Haughton. The girl testified, while Greenway denied the accusations. The May term will close Saturday and the September term will begin the first Monday in September.

Dugger Barber Walter Mitchell Dies Diving in White River
Walter Mitchell 24 of Dugger fell from a high river bank while diving with a Cass township picnic party near Edwardsport. The Yung Brothers barber, drafted into the army soon, died after his body sank in about four feet of water. He is survived by his mother Mrs. Fannie Mitchell and sister Mrs. Lola Yung.

Oscar Bennett and Henry Huffman of Sullivan county testified before the state board of pardons that their signatures were forged on a petition seeking clemency for Ira Medley, condemned for murder in a coal mine quarrel. The clash followed in the state house as supporters and opponents argued. Medley was sentenced June 9, 1914, for killing Truston Isbell when Isbell reached for a pick during a quarrel. Mrs. Pearl Karns protested clemency for Medley.
