Sullivan County commissioners break delay and back a public vote on establishing a county hospital. They note population growth and mining injuries create demand and say the plan should be put to the people for a majority decision before any construction or funding proceeds.
Anderson Indiana June 11 Dr W J Fairfield a noted physician once of this city thought drowned at Gunnison River near Delta Colorado and declared legally dead is alive in Denver He recalls leaving Delta and a swim in Gunnison river then memory returns after two years in Alaska He seeks his wife Mrs Fairfield and son Robert and had nearly 20000 in life insurance now filed claims by family were rejected until his return He is a cousin of Mrs R A Plunkett of this city.
Miss Irene Boswell St Quentin of Noblesville recently returned from Vienna where she studied with Leschetizky. She played at Miss Voss in Noblesville for the state chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution, performing two pieces by her master, Mendelssohn Spinning Song, and another number after generous applause.
The Sullivan County Medical Association met in Fairbanks last Wednesday evening. Local doctors Corbin Scott Thompson Kennedy Neff Briggs Billman Crowder Higbee attended with guests Drs Weinstein Thixtun of Terre Haute and Dr Bland of Fairbanks read the principal paper on Diarrhoes in Children. A banquet followed.
The petition of Harry Brown for a road in Turman township has been declared sufficient by the county commissioners.
Lottie Turpin sues Otto M. Sebring and Bankers' Surety Co. in Clay County for damages over the death of her husband struck on an interurban track after alleged intoxication. The suit cites liquor sale to the husband. Other cases include a dismissal for James E. Shipman vs Parks and a note case moved to Greene County.
At the eighty third annual commencement of Indiana State University three hundred degrees are awarded including Bachelor of Arts to Jeanne Crowder Indianapolis Bayard Lang Sullivan Guy Speeker West Lafayette and Alva Taylor Farmersburg. Indiana Dental College graduates John Lacy Wilson Carlisle also listed in the ceremony results.
C W Powell and Prof E D Gregg organize a Lucerne Indiana bank. Gregg and Powell visited Lucerne three weeks ago to secure capital, Powell returned Friday to complete the plan. Gregg will serve as cashier for the first year, with Lucerne citizens praised for the new enterprise.
The funeral of Philip R. Jenkins will be held at two oclock tomorrow afternoon at the Presbyterian church conducted by Rev. J H McArthur pastor. Interment will be in Center Ridge.
Mrs Catherine Wise aged 60 of Oaktown died Saturday evening at her daughter Mrs Charles Colvin’s home on North Court Street from heart failure. Widow of Civil War veteran Christopher Wise she leaves eight daughters. Remains sent to Oaktown Monday for burial.
Indianapolis June 8 The Indiana branch of the National Congress of Mothers and Parent Teachers Associations closed its organization with officers elected for one to three year terms. President Mrs Fred Hoke Indianapolis and a large slate of officers and directors were named with plans to meet in Huntington in November.
Hymera restaurant keeper Jim Cheney traveled to Terre Haute on Wednesday and visited numerous saloons. While climbing an imagined rope in a livery stable Officer Smock intervened and the chef tested jail breakfast. He hired an attorney and was released Thursday morning on a promise to return to Hymera.
Judge Remester holds illegal liquor sales by a licensed pharmacist do not equal gross immorality and that the state board lacks power to revoke a license solely for such sales. The decision cites existing law tying second illegal sale convictions to license revocation and outlines board authority over pharmacist registration.
The Sullivan planing mill sale to William T. Dix and his son Hezekiah Dix is finalized. Former owner Hix Davis will depart Tuesday for St. Petersburg Florida to pursue lumber and building business ventures.
Merom June 11 The annual graduation exercises of Union Christian college will be held in the chapel tomorrow evening. The three graduates receiving the A B degree are Joseph Long son of President Long Ward N Black of Palestine Ill and W G Rowe of Farmland Ind.
Carlisle residents Carl M. Knotts and Miss Gertrude Coleman wed Monday afternoon at the Methodist parsonage with Rev. P. C. Lisman officiating.
County commissioners awarded contracts for 19 bridges totaling about 12 000 dollars. Sullivan Bridge and Supply Company secured 17 of the nineteen bridges valued at 8 998 dollars, including projects for Jones Walters Trimble two Buck Crowder Nelson Drake Cox May Goosetown Dodds Rusk and Carrico. Vincennes Bridge Company received the Cox bridge and Merom Station repair projects.
Prosecuting attorney Bays sought to revoke a six month jail term for William L. Hunt a city druggist after Hunt Gambill argued the term had expired. Judge Bridwell sustained the defense demurrer and Hunt escapes imprisonment. Bays granted appeal to the supreme court.
Supreme Justice Keough last week ordered Harry K. Thaw moved from Matteawan asylum to Westchester County Jail in White Plains. The transfer occurred Saturday and Thaw will remain in jail under court orders until further actions, as lawyers plan to press for his release next Monday.
Sullivan lodge of Odd Fellows and the Daughters of Rebekah held their annual memorial exercises on Sunday afternoon. A. G. McNabb delivered the address. Graves of deceased members were decorated at Center Ridge cemetery.
A circuit court jury after an all day deliberation returns a verdict for the defendant in the Peter Dunn versus Sullivan Greene Coal Company conversion suit.
The Shirley Hill Coal Co. tested its new washery at Mine No. 3 near Dugger. The 100000 dollar plant with a ten acre water lake cleans coal by gravity and churns, producing purer fuel with 15 to 30 cents more per ton and less dirt.
The Vincennes District Epworth League convention at Loogootee selected Shelburn as the next meeting place. About two hundred delegates attended. Miss Bessie Hancock of Sullivan was named secretary. Officers elected for the coming year include President J Frank McClure of Oaktown and vice presidents Hattie Peek Washington L E Van Osdel Washington Mary Creek Vincennes Emile Schwey Loogootee, Treasurer H T Saucerman Jacksonville, and Junior League Superintendent Mrs Davis of Odon.
Mary B. Dixon of Shelburn was found guilty of assault and battery in Squire Kirkham's court last Wednesday. She received a $1 fine plus $18.40 costs and served time in jail. Eliza Dixon, who faced a similar charge, paid her fine.
Philip R. Jenkins veteran of the Civil War and former Sullivan County Clerk was found dead in an excavation at his North State Street home. Death likely from apoplexy. Jenkins, born 1840 in Carlisle, served as deputy clerk then clerk, later engaged in business and banking. He leaves wife Belle Rackley and two sons Ed and Will, plus a brother in Los Angeles.
James Kaufman of near Merom bought a horse for 35 dollars from a stranger who offered the animal for sale. The horse had been stolen from G. W. Adams of Lawrenceville Illinois. Adams claimed the horse last week, and after consulting Sheriff Wible Kaufman returned the horse to its owner. The stranger is believed to have gone to Oklahoma.
William M. Smith, former county infirmary superintendent after nine years, bought a residence and a sizable ground tract on Duane street from William Borders and will take occupancy of the property.
A report that Ralph Sloan, instructor in music at Sullivan schools, had paralysis at East Lake, Ohio is erroneous.
