Government railroads shown to lose vast sums, says report
The Railroad Administration's Director of Finance reports a total operating loss of 900,478,000 with 677,513,000 charged to first class roads. It argues government operation burdened taxpayers, cites wage and purchase costs, and notes possible income guarantees under the transportation act. The piece casts doubt on public ownership and favors private management.
