Monday evening John Calvert of Dugger attempted to board a freight train. He was thrown beneath the caboose and the car passed over his right leg below the knee. The limb was mangled and amputated shortly after. His face and body were badly bruised and his condition is considered dangerous. He was taken to a Terre Haute hospital.
Miss Carrie Carter of Carlisle is absent with Charles Willis of Paxton, suspected of eloping. Police search led by Constable John Watson after Carrie, guarded by her mother, missed the 10:35 EB and T H train. Willis, married and recently reconciled with his wife, reportedly left town northward.
Last Saturday evening about 67 o'clock Albert Kerner was accidentally killed in Cummins hardware store in Hymera by the discharge of a loaded revolver. Clerk Charles Vanarsdall was serving Kerner when the gun fired unexpectedly, striking him in the heart and causing instant death. Kerner, 25, from Freetown, Indiana, was a carpenter working in Hymera. Vanarsdall, respected in Hymera, is prostrated by the tragedy.
Levi Miller, 25, son of Geo Miller of O H Crowder's farm north of Sullivan, drowned while bathing in Fall Creek at Indianapolis last Sunday afternoon. His remains arrived here today for burial.
Coroner W. P. Maxwell concluded his testimony in the Jacobs case at Carlisle last Wednesday and filed the verdict with the county clerk last Thursday. The record details the coroner's findings and the formal conclusion of the inquest proceedings.

John Smith, 62, reportedly became insane on Friday and was brought to Sullivan for confinement. Constable Doting and officers located him in the Tar Water Sage neighborhood and placed him under care.
Acting at the request of their sister Mrs. John Ross who lives two miles south of Sullivan Walter Kemper of St. Louis C E Kemper of Indianapolis and John Kemper of Goodland Ind went to the Ross home this morning and took Mrs Ross and her little son to Indianapolis They allege her husband has been cheating and maltreating her and that she feared for her safety They sought Sheriff John S Dudley to accompany them Ross was away from home when they left and likely learned of the disappearance at noon No objection from Mr Ross is known
Mrs Ellen Jones 32 wife of Richard Jones superintendent at Citizens coal mine died after taking carbolic acid Friday evening. She had addiction to liquor and husband left her due to the habit. Coroner's inquest ruled death the result of voluntary poisoning while temporarily insane.
The Sulivan County Teachers' Institute will run the week of Sept 5 at the Court House with forenoon lectures and afternoon classroom work in Sullivan School Building. Teachers should study the Folder and bring texts as the county superintendent aims to make this the best practical institute yet. Music by Miss Laura Bryant will be taught daily to help pupils this winter and improve overall school work. Indianapolis is noted for top city schools and this program seeks similar excellence.
The institute features Miss Edith Whitenack guiding English and primary reading with a focus on practical pupil development. Mr. Howard Sandison of the State Normal School leads psychology and school management talks, plus opening exercises. Noted readers Miss M. M. Thompson, Mrs. C. W. Boucher, and Mr. Noah Bielharz will headline evening programs.
Paul Dominick an Italian laborer on the Southern Indiana railroad near Shelburn fell from a box car last Saturday evening suffering injuries that caused his death Sunday morning.
A party of Indianapolis Southern and Illinois Central executives toured Sullivan last Thursday. The visit followed the Indianapolis Southern pavement purchase by Illinois Central as 1 000 workers push grading toward Bloomington. Officials cited Sullivan’s central location near coal fields as ideal for new terminals and car shops, but local interest lags behind other cities.
Frank Kimberlain of Haddon township won a legal recovery when a deed misplaced for 18 years was found in the auditor’s office. The circuit court decision in a quiet title suit confirmed he had been dispossessed and an action to reopen judgment will be filed to recover the land. The deed’s discovery last Wednesday afternoon prevented a 40 acre loss.
