War Fifty Years Ago Grant Opens the Petersburg Siege
Fifty years ago General Grant began the Petersburg siege after a costly June with heavy Union losses. Cavalry under Wilson and Kautz struck the Weldon railroad and Danville lines, destroying bridges and stock, then retreated toward Grant's lines as Confederate forces pursued. Sherman assaulted Kenesaw Mountain positions near Atlanta, with fierce fighting and heavy casualties on both sides as Johnston withstood the Federal efforts to break his line.

State Board rules fees for sheriffs and clerks
The state board of accounts issues an opinion on which fees sheriffs and clerks may collect in various counties. It says they cannot claim fees for probate commission sessions, or per diem for juvenile court days when circuit court is in session. Fees for circuit court sessions apply only on actual court days. A sheriff may not receive extra pay for insane patient care beyond reimbursements. The board will uphold the 1913 act legalizing certain in and out fees unless the court says otherwise.
