Industrial Board Hears Evidence in Meneics Case
The Indiana State Industrial Board held its first hearing in Paxton Thursday afternoon at the county courthouse. Andrew J. Palmer, through attorney A. E. DeBaun, filed a claim for injuries against Jackson I. Derring, Francis S. Peabody and Jabez Woolley, receivers of the Woolley Coal Company. The defense argued the receivers were appointed by a federal court and the proceedings were dismissed for the Woolley interests. William Loomis Wedler of Chicago appeared as the present receiver for the Chicago and Eastern railroad coal properties, and the case was amended to name him as defendant. Six witnesses testified, and the board reserved its decision, which will be announced later from Indianapolis. This marks the first Indiana Industrial Board hearing in the county under the new state compensation law. Palmer contends a prior written agreement settling his injuries was not final, while the defendants say it was. Palmer was injured at the Woolley Coal Company mine in Paxton several months ago. Under the compensation law, damages are limited to the judgment for injuries.
