A local tax review meeting for seven counties was adjourned yesterday after officials added more items to the taxable list. The review aimed to clarify assessments and address public concerns about valuation.
The document documents a county tax assessment with total appraised value of 1 767 002 and lists numerous oil companies and associates such as Ken beds Oil Company Denney Oil Company Hawthorn Oil Company Herreka Oil Company Port Young & Co Osburn Oil Company R G Riggs Oil and Gas Company among others. It notes differing assessments for each entity and references board actions regarding the assessment process.
County commissioners awarded the John Lund concrete road contract to J. 8 S. Adams Construction Company as the lowest bid after resolving bids and an opposition suit. Carpenter Construction’s bid was higher, and an injunction against awarding the contract was withdrawn.

The first new wheat of the season was delivered to John N. Allen at Merom Station by Gus Hoesman. The wheat, grown on Julius Hoesman land in Gill Township, graded 60, sold for 96 cents per bushel.
Parbon is granted for Reuben Wheve by the board after Wheat Murdered George White in Jackson Township. The prisoner received a bore sentence and is to serve time in Michigan prison. Witness testimony placed Wheve in Knox County, with details noting intoxication and a brutal act in the county.
Shelburn men and others are accused of corrupt election practices in a grand jury case. Prosecution led by Martin Pigg and R C Minton with defense by Ebert Gambill J W Lindley and W F Wood. Names include Poin Watson William Gras McCrocklin Ollie McCrocklin C W Daugherty and many more. The case centers on importation of voters and election corruption tied to a local option vote. The judge named is Bridwell of the Sable county court. The proceedings will proceed with a grand jury and prosecuting attorneys.
George Elliott a farmer near Champaign Ul was bound over to the Sullivan circuit court on a charge of stealing A Buiex touring car belonging to A Billman of this city. His preliminary hearing before Squire Scherb was Monday in the courthouse. Bond fixed at 5000 dollars. A crowd of Champaign residents gave character witnesses for Elliott. Billman was the only witness for the state.
James W. Juadd by attorney M A Pradden filed in circuit court a petition to appoint an administrator for the absentee’s estate. The claim notes the defendant left property in Tradden township over twenty years ago and his whereabouts remain unknown. Relatives report no one cared for the land, which is deteriorating without management.
Miss Jessie Perry wed Dr. Hubert Collins of Prairie Creek at her Merom home near Merom, Wednesday evening. Rev. oe B. Ifershey of U. C C College officiated. Nellie Hallet served as bridesmaid and Don Whalen of Farmersburg was best man. The couple seek happiness in their new life.
In circuit court Friday afternoon Glenn V. Simmons was granted a divorce from Thomas W. Simmons. Glenn Loudermilk was restored to her maiden name. She alleged cruel and inhuman treatment and said they could not live together. The defendant paid the costs and did not appear.
The Jerusalem chapter of the Royal Arch Masons will confer the mark master and past master degrees tonight to members and guests.

Richard Griffith ten years old son of Mr and Mrs Irwin Griffith of the Hamilton Blocks near Hymera drowned Thursday evening while swimming with playmates at an artificial pond. A piece of timber used as aid sank with him. companions sono realized the danger. The body was recovered about forty minutes after the search began. Interment followed at Mt Pleasant cemetery.
Two damage suits in the Indiana circuit court name James "Carby" Howe, a recent life-term convict, as defendant. They allege Howe violated liquor license conditions by keeping a saloon open after hours, serving intoxicated patrons, and contributing to a disorderly house linked to the deaths of Charles Irwin and Arlie Duckworth. Damages seek 2500 dollars in one suit and 3500 dollars in another, with bonds posted as security.
The Glendora coal mine north of the city began hoisting coal on Monday after extensive repairs. Operated by J. Woolley Coal Company, the mine is in first class condition with about half the workforce currently employed and plans to add workers over time. The company has extensive contracts and will operate indefinitely.
An examination will be held in this city on Saturday July 22 to fill a contemplated vacancy in the Hymera postmastership and other vacancies in that office. A large party from Farmersburg passed through Monday en route to the border with guns and camp gear. They planned a one week hunting and fishing trip near the Greene Monroe county line and traveled by car with a big trailer. Among the party were Walker Jennings Elza Jennings Dr Oliphant and Dr Bolinger.
Elmer Q Oliphant famed Purdue and West Point football star and Walter Camp all American halfback was in Sullivan Friday visiting his uncle George Scofield at Dugger. He has a three months furlough.
A telegram from Irvine Kentucky reports the Sullivan group struck oil while drilling on a lease owned by local Sullivan interests. The well flowed through two feet of oil sand at a depth of 200 feet. Lease holders include Fred Bays E R Riggs Ward Hawkins R L Bailey and J W and S S E Lindley.
The Jethro Bass property at Main and Wall streets sold at public auction Saturday to the Sullivan Knights of Pythias for 4000. The lodge plans a handsome new home and bought the building and adjacent lots separately before bidding the whole tract.
Merom Chautauqua management outlines two new features for this year’s event. Centennial day will be observed Saturday August 1 with national speakers in the afternoon. Democratic day is Friday August 4 with Senator Hamilton Lewis of Illinois to speak. Republican day follows Saturday August 20 with Senator James B. Watson of Indiana to speak.

Miss Glenn Voliva is Wilbur Glenn Voliva's daughter and a Zionist movement leader. Mrs. Charles Voliva is Wilbur Voliva's brother’s wife. their wives are sisters, daughters of Dr. Steele of Palestine.
