Senate Debates Commerce Department Creation

General Chaffee Notes Insurgent Strongholds in Southern Luzon and Nearby Islands

In his annual report General Chaffee identifies Batangas and Laguna in southern Luzon and the islands of Samar Mindoro and Cebu as the disturbed areas where insurgent forces are active. He attributes guerrilla persistence to the terrain and tactics of the fighters and warns that natives friendly to Americans fear informing on insurgents due to assassination risks.

Bela A. Brown a prominent Rochester jeweler aged about sixty to seventy was found killed in his salesrooms last night. Police say the attacker struck from the rear with a hammer, crushing the skull.

Train kills father and son on trestle near Branham

Branham Texas January 20. Professor W C Crossman and his 15 year old son Willie were struck and killed on a trestle one mile north of Branham Sunday evening by a passenger train. They were instantly killed.

Rural Carriers Association Organized in Muncie

Indiana Rural Carriers association formed in Muncie with 25 rural mail carriers present. Offiers named include President Samuel F. Scott of Muncie, Vice President F. R. Hamilton of Fort Wayne, Secretary W. L. Fetters of Bluffton, and Treasurer A. H. Bushong of Portland. A committee was appointed to draft by laws and constitution for review February 1.

Charles Pittser of Yorktown followed his wife Donna Pittser from Daleville to Muncie and shot her five times killing her instantly at her sister’s home. He was drunk and jealous and the wife was about to kiss him when he fired.
