Legend of the Christmas Tree Origin in German Folklore
An old German tale credits St Wilfred with transforming forest Christmas rites in central Germany around 725. He and Prince Gregor convert the Thor worshippers after felling the thunder oak and planting a green fir tree to mark Christ’s birth, teaching the tribes to celebrate with a fir as a symbol of the day.
