A late Saturday visit left Sullivan swarmed by a cloud of tiny white gnats. Thousands filled the air turning sidewalks to a field of insects and making walking hard around the public square. The gnats resembled mosquitoes in size and vanished that night as strong winds blew them away.
Burglars prowled Sullivan last Friday night visiting several residences. At W. H. Lucas on State Street a thief entered unlocked doors awakening Mrs. Lucas and his daughter Glenn mistook the intruder for her sister. The thief fled after a brief confrontation. Other homes of Arthur Martin Ward Hawkins and Chas Hagemier were also visited.
Large barn of Chas Waiters south of Fairbanks burned Sunday night about midnight. Family awoke to bright light and smoke. neighbors helped save the dwelling. Horses survived, but hay oats grain and farming implements were destroyed. Cause of the blaze not known.
City Marshal Willis captured Bert McAlister and Lee Leslie, two miners wanted at Linton for skipping a $50 board bill with widow Daugherty. He brought them here Friday, returning them to Linton on Saturday for legal proceedings.
James Hampton, reading a destitution notice about his mother Nancy Hampton and her five children in a vacant Farmersburg house, traveled to Terre Haute. He bought a cook stove, provisions, and food for a family that had endured days of hardship and will seek work to support her.
The Republican national committee plans moving pictures of Presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt and Vice Presidential candidate Charles Fairbanks to connect with voters. Edward Shields, under contract, will use the footage in campaign addresses, with Indianapolis and Indiana events likely. Shields filmed in Indianapolis with photographer Thomas Nash as they met Fairbanks near his home on North Meridian Street.
The 9th annual Old Settlers gathering met at Bennett's Grove Farmersburg over Thursday and Friday. About 5000 attended Thursday while rain forced cancellations Friday including Felix T. McWhirter and Will Hays. John C. Chaney and W. T. Crawford spoke Thursday, with Robert W. Miers addressing at the Farmersburg Opera House.
During a Friday progress of the Eclipse band concert Brinton Creager shot his wife Gertrude Coldscott Creager twice and then killed himself with a .44 revolver on the south side of the square near the Sullivan Co. Loan and Trust Co. building. The act, likely a fit of jealous rage after a planned divorce, left two bodies and an orphaned child. The inquest and funeral followed, with interment in Creager cemetery near Paxton. Gertrude, 21, was adopted from Rose Orphan's Home at Terre Haute. Brinton, 26, was the son of Thomas Creager now in Texas.
Rail companies Vandalia I V and Southern Indiana cut coal freight to Indianapolis to 50 cents from Greene Sullivan counties, matching Vandalia. I V and Vandalia followed by Southern Indiana with possible cross-division of rates amid embargo concerns, Evansville Terre Haute expected to match.
Indiana polis News erred in reporting Sullivan County had 84 felony convictions in 1903. In fact the county had one felony conviction for larceny, later recommitted to the Indiana Reform School for Boys, with no prison sentence. Misdemeanor counts were correct. four felonies recorded so far this year.

Peter Reed sixteen months old son of Mr and Mrs Kenney Reed of the town district was found dead Saturday morning in a boiler of suds in the yard. The child died before help arrived and the tragedy occurred while he played near the washing boiler left uncovered by Mrs Reed. The funeral was conducted Sunday afternoon at three oclock.
Miss Hortense Luzader of this city, stenographer for C. W. Welman, earned a special certificate of honorable mention from the business education exhibit at the St. Louis World’s Fair. She is praised for excellent penmanship on display at the fair. Luzader is a Sullivan high school graduate and daughter of B. W. Luzader.
The county infirmary in Sullivan celebrates the twenty-fifth wedding anniversary of Superintendent Wm. Smith and his wife with a large dinner and a tour of the well-kept facility. Guests from multiple nearby towns join in the day, applauding the clean condition, ample gardens, and improvements under the Smiths.
The Little Flock church Sunday School plans a picnic in Wm. Higdon's grove, a quarter mile south of the church, this Saturday. Arrangements are under way to attract a large attendance of Sunday schools.
More than 1000 attendees braved threatening weather for the twenty second annual Sunday School Convention at Manns Grove. Eleven Sunday Schools participated with strong praise and orderly program led by W S Lester as president and D T Cushman as secretary. The event featured prayers, songs such as A Mighty Army Idle Stand Not All Day and On to Victory, and a school drill under Rev C H Pinnick.
William Wilson aged 78 of Sullivan county obtained a marriage license for his bride to be Mary A Harbin aged 59. The couple planned to wed with a minister in Sullivan county after securing the license yesterday.
