Oil struck while drilling for coal at Narrows well
Billy Babbitt drilled for coal on James Osburn’s Fairbanks township farm at the Narrows last week. Oil appeared at eighteen feet and flowed heavier as the drill descended, leaving a surface oil scum on the river. The crack in rock caused the oil to bleed out, and the drill veered deeper. Babbitt abandoned that hole and started another. Local oil men seek leases from Osburn, who has not leased yet. A Shelburn man dreamed of an oil well at the Narrows six years ago and marked the spot, later used for Babbitt’s hole.
