A century and a half ago Nicholas Thomas and Lucy Somes in Mt Desert Mo wed themselves due to no minister nearby. They drew a town contract dated 1780 with vows to love cherish nourish and obey in the presence of God angels and witnesses. A Georgia judge who married two couples at once later corrected the matter to satisfy the contracts.
