Death of John H. Noyes founder of Oneida community
The death at Niagara Falls Ontario ends the life of John Humphrey Noyes born 1811 in Brattleboro Vermont. He founded the Oneida perfectionist settlement in Madison County New York after a Putney Vermont abortive attempt. Noyes preached equality and communal living with restricted marriage and selective birth, guiding a 600 acre colony that grew to 5000000? in property value. The community survived legal pressure, shifting to simpler marriage in 1879, while Noyes remained its doctrinal leader until his death.
