Dixon's Great Tragedy: Rock River Bridge Collapse

The Dixon bridge disaster occurred thirty two years ago on a May Sunday when the Rock River span collapsed. Forty two fatalities were reported with thirty seven drowned or crushed by iron, and many more injured as a crowd gathered for baptisms watched from the riverbank. Women and girls comprised most of the victims.

Sterling flotilla lights up river with boats and beer schooners

The Sterling flotilla moved on the river yesterday with about twenty launches and around fifty row boats. Pleasure seekers enjoyed an ideal day on the placid waters as boats dotted the riverbanks. Stevedores worked industriously. no strikes reported. Mr and Mrs David Sechey returned from Prophetstown after a several day visit. A man injured months ago at the Q bridge has recovered and resumed his job at the Rock Falls depot.

Woman's Club Elects New Officers At Year End

Last meeting of the official year was held Saturday with many members present as the Woman's Club announced new officers and plans for the coming year.

Mrs Kehr New President Leads Woman's Club

The Woman's club held its May meeting with Mrs Bowman presiding. Officers and committees were announced for the coming year including Mrs Kehr as president and a permanent civic improvement committee. Philanthropic work received emphasis with an appropriation to Hull House supplies. The event featured vocal and instrumental solos and a generous reception, with thanks extended to city papers for coverage.

Man Gores Bull Attack Leaves Sterling Man Bruised

James H. Woodburn, a Sterling resident, was slightly injured Saturday evening when a Jersey bull charged him in his barn. He knocked the animal unconscious with a club after the bull turned vicious, then walked home to wash and recover before returning to the scene. Woodburn, a longtime nursery worker, believes the bull has learned a lesson and fears no further trouble. From historic Ephrata, four Revolutionary War era picture postals were received showing Brother and Sister Houses near Ephrata, weathered but standing.

President Roosevelt to Visit Clinton Illinois on Wednesday

President Theodore Roosevelt will stop in Clinton on Wednesday morning for a brief address to residents. Preparations by Mayor John B. Lewis include school participation, wildflower bouquets, and decorative arrangements. The Northwestern Railway plans strict safety measures with stops at Sterling Dixon and DeKalb en route to Chicago.

Sewing in schools heads toward junior high handwork program

The committee on course of study recommends hand work for grades one through five under special teachers in drawing and manual training and suggests sewing for girls in grades six and seven in place of knife work.
