The Reverend Edwin Weary preached at Grace Church Sunday morning. He urged parishioners to join in the Lord's work, saying a good preacher assists the congregation rather than doing all the labor himself.
Rev Edwin Weary took the pulpit at Grace Episcopal church to preach morning and evening services. The rector urged teamwork in God’s vineyard and announced changes including 730 am communion and weekday services to boost parish growth and blessings.
Old time resident McDonald Green, visiting Sterling for the first time since moving with his parents in 1869, stops at the Randolph. He is a son of McAlien Green who once lived near Coletgamit and engaged in mercantile business in Sterling. Now living in Minneapolis, he runs a local business and is cousin of Judge Solomon H Betiea of Chicago.
Frank D. Throop resigns as city editor of the Standard in Sterling to become managing editor of the Muscatine Town Journal, taking up duties May 8. R. B. McNeil will become city editor at the Standard, with Earl E. Holdridge taking over McNeil's duties and continuing as Rock Falls correspondent.
The McCarthy Improvement Co. will demonstrate asphalt dressing free of cost to compare with worn brick paving. The paving committee designates the Third Street and Western Avenue intersection for a test, covering existing brick with a two inch asphalt layer. If successful, much of the river crossing brick paving may be replaced.
Dixon club invites Sterling club members and their ladies to a May party in the city tonight Friday May 5. A large attendance is expected from the Aotai club amid pleasant weather. An important Eastern Star meeting will be held this evening with several candidates receiving the work followed by refreshments.
Mrs Pfundstein has been called to rest with funeral arrangements announced for Sunday at a local church. The obituary notes family members and community members mourn the loss.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday in Prophetstown for Mrs Hill the mother of Mrs F H John. The obituary notes she passed away at home and lists funeral arrangements for Wednesday.
Mrs. Caroline Pfundstein died Sunday at 3 45 am at her Fourth Avenue home after a seven week illness from kidney trouble. Funeral Tuesday at 12 30 pm at the house with Rev B Lee Fipm officiating, burial at the Jordan Lutheran church cemetery beside her husband who died four years ago. Born in Germany April 20 1837 she came to the United States and lived in Pennsylvania before moving to Jordan and later to this era. She leaves nine children nine sons and two daughters and three brothers and a sister in Germany. The community extends sympathy to the bereaved family.
Mrs Anna Hill mother of Mrs FP Johns of this city died at her home two miles southeast of Ergonesetown at 8 o'clock Sunday evening from a sudden stroke. She was the widow of William Hill and the notice continues on page 8.

The Christian Endevor union held its regular quarterly meeting at the Congregational church led by Mary Hey. The group discussed affiliating with the National Co E union and decided to send a delegate to the international convention in Baltimore on July 5. L V Starkey spoke, and Misses May and Fannie Wilcox performed a duet.
About a dozen local farmers plan alfalfa trials in Tampico area this year. Seed has been sown and results depend on inoculated soil bacteria to fix nitrogen. Alfred Smith notes a growing patch by the canal bank and urges securing the necessary inoculated soil. If successful, alfalfa could boost forage yields and hay prices. Dr Marvin returns from California after two weeks visiting the Sterling colony.
A storm struck a farm near Milledgeville killing several horses which were scheduled to plow fields Friday. Local authorities investigated the incident and warned about lightning dangers on rural properties.
A severe windstorm near Walnut causes livestock fatalities as a man is shocked by electricity and injured. Livestock including lambs die after windows are shattered. Fire and rescue crews respond to the scene.
A heavy rain and electric storm swept Sterling Friday afternoon and night. In Milledgeville and nearby, lightning struck a plow, killing two of three horses and injuring William Dunby, who escaped serious harm. Hailstones described as large as eggs damaged windows and killed some lambs. Walnut residents reported hail almost burying itself in ground with severe forces.
H A Stilson of Tampico reports peat beds six to seven miles east along the Northwestern line may be worked and developed by a Sterling capital partnership. Investigations found the peat to be excellent for briquettes with beds ten to fourteen feet thick. The peat is dug ground mixed and pressed into bricks ready to burn using a special machine. prospects for opening the beds look favorable.
A thief enters the Randolph Hotel on a daytime visit, unlocks doors, and searches rooms before escaping with cash and a gold watch. The incident describes bold actions, theft of money, and valuable items, with no injuries reported.
A thief entered Rooms 34 and 35 at the Randolph hotel Saturday afternoon while occupied by two hotel workers, stealing money a Rosa Studer and Josephine Stockler left their rooms with doors locked. Rosa lost 2.80 from a dresser drawer and Josephine lost 3 in silver a 25 watch and other items. Police investigated but have not located a suspect, noting doors were locked after the robbery and a key may have been used.
Reports from surrounding cities praise William Owen in Shakespeare's Othello at the Academy of Music. The Wednesday performance May 3 is expected to draw a capacity audience with J. W. McGonnell and Camilla Reynolds receiving high notes for their Desdemona and Othello portrayals.
A party searched the river from Sterling to Lyndon in launches and rowboats for Frank S Ayres. A fedora found on Hubbard's Island shore near Willows, three miles west of the city, had no identifying marks. Edith Sheldon slowly recovers from a recent ankle injury.
