Man Waiter Attacks Bowling Alley Victim but Held by Bravery

A masked assailant attempted a bowling alley hold up but fled after the proprietor confronted the thug. The incident ended with no serious injuries as patrons aided the defender and police were alerted.

Man Named Hunt Swindles Five Dollars From Frank Johns

Frank Johns exposed a con man named Hunt who claimed his wife and child were dead to obtain five dollars. Middaugh pleaded guilty to similar charges and was remanded on bond. A separate attempted holdup at Sterling bowling alleys ended when Miles Wharfield defended himself with a knife, prompting the attacker to flee. Wharfield then bought a receiver for future protection.

Mrs Anna M Peule Dies in Rock Falls After Illness

Anna M Peule of Rock Falls died this afternoon after a brief illness at her home. Born September 15 1822 she endured old age and illness while bedridden since Friday. She leaves several sons and daughters. her husband preceded her in death. Funeral arrangements will be announced in Tuesday’s paper.

Mr and Mrs Theodore Frank of Montmorency township were surprised at their Montmorency home Sunday by about twenty five relatives. An elaborate dinner followed and the couple received a rocking chair as a gift marking their tenth wedding anniversary.

Horse Strays Reported by Henry ONeill at Hahnaman

Henry ONeill of Hahnaman township suspected horse theft after a missing horse. He notified city police to watch for the animal described. A horse was later found near his home following another animal.

Fire destroys a smoke house on Join Michaels farm about nine o clock Sunday evening. Michaels was smoking hams shoulders and sausage inside. The building and its contents were totally destroyed with pork valued at twenty dollars and the building at twenty five dollars.

Union Meetings Highlight Evening at First Church

In Sunday activities the First Church hosted two union events with the Epworth Leagues of three twin-city Methodists. H K Hostetter led the gathering, and Rev Gage preached an evening sermon praised as highly engaging. A large crowd filled the auditorium and many could not enter. A Friday evangelistic service and a wedding in Rock Falls are also noted.

Chapel Walls Not Damaged by Bulging Concrete

The Rev. Diehl of Fourth Street Methodist says the chapel suffered only minor damage. Two feet of the southwest wall were pushed out by swelling yellow pine floor boards after a heavy rain caused them to swell and freeze. Repairs have been ordered at the contractor’s expense and are expected to be small.

District Attorney Bethea arrived in Chicago late last night from Washington where he had been in conference for about a week. He said his visit was not necessarily significant and that he was summoned to discuss phases of the beef trust inquiry and other matters.

Rev Peters Liked After Two Sermons at Christian Church

Eureka preacher Rev Mr Peters drew strong praise after delivering two excellent sermons at the Christian Church yesterday morning and evening. A young man aged about 30 to 35, he has six years of preaching experience and is pursuing postgraduate study at Eureka College. Silas Jones plans to preach next Sunday as discussion continues on selecting a pastor for the city church.

Sterling and Stockfans Woman's Club Sees Child Rights Talk

The Sterling and Stockfans Woman's Club held its regular meeting on Saturday with a deep program on The Rights of the Child and Neglected Children. Miss Jena Hansen and Mrs. D. M. Singer presented vocal solos, followed by Mrs. Austin's discussion on neglected children, noting many arise from well to do homes and busy parents. The program urged education, health laws, patience, truthfulness, and shared care to safeguard a child’s future. The talk stressed individual rights at home, in school, and in public life and hinted at the need for better parental involvement and guidance.
