Northwestern Steel Pollution Program Modernizes Mills
Northwestern Steel and Wire Co, a major steel producer, operates under an Illinois Pollution Board plan since 1965. Over six years the company spent in excess of 9 million dollars on pollution controls for air and water. The mill runs two furnaces with emission controls while two older units were closed for failing to meet regulations. Water use from the Rock River has dropped from 55 thousand to 5 thousand gallons per minute, primarily for cooling and lubricating furnaces. Recycled water passes settling ponds, a flume, and a skimmer before returning to the river cleaner than it arrived.
