VD Epidemic Among Illinois Youth Alarms Public Health
Illinois public health officials warn that venereal disease among youths ages 15 to 29 is rising sharply, with 15 to 19-year-olds showing the largest percentage increase. The 1972 survey tallies 369 syphilis and 9,566 gonorrhea cases in Illinois youths 15 to 19, and over 52,000 cases from ages 10 to 39. The Illinois Department of Public Health urges schools and parents to promote prevention and offers a toll free VD information line at 1 800 252 8989 for confidential guidance and treatment resources.
