District contest acts draw 21 bands and S Club banquet

Chicago announcer Bob Elson will be the guest speaker at the S Club banquet on Tuesday March 14 at the coliseum. G A A will serve dinner at 630 pm with tickets on sale to the public and discounted for S H S students. Elson, famed Windy City sportscaster, will share anecdotes from baseball football hockey and more before heading to California camps. Sterling residents praise his engaging talk and he is kept busy year round.

1939 Blue and Gold Displays New Features

The 1939 Blue and Gold annual advances with more pictures and informal shots. Senior adviser Miss Echternach notes subscriptions through March 15, Mary Andrews oversees the yearbook with Bob Salm and the board. A full page colored photo of the school debuts with a new cover and free dance tickets for subscribers.

Friday Classes for Jitterbugs Begin This Year

Miss Turnell restarts ballroom dancing lessons for students to learn essentials and join school social functions. Three beginner and three intermediate groups accommodate 283 signups, with enrolment open to all. Classes run during girls’ gym periods while boys adjust their schedule.

Richards elected director of National Bandmasters Association

Sterling band director J. J. Richards was elected director for 1939 40 at the National Bandmasters Association convention in Fort Dodge Iowa He conducted his march Shield of Liberty and remains a leading composer with more than a hundred marches and overtures He joined Sterling two years ago after a career with Barnum and Bailey Circus Ringling Brothers and others He is also author of two musician books and leads the S H and Community bands.

Latin Students Stage Catiline Conspiracy Play at Club Meeting

Latin Club members present The Collapse of the Catilinian Conspiracy a short play from early Rome March 7 with Sanford Mitchell as Catiline and Bob Philips as Lentulus Jim Brown Marjorie John Darlene Weber Na Mae Brogh Arlene Karel portray apiritora Evelyn Shaible speaks on Catiline and Ruth Welton covers Cicero. Pat Donahue shares music Dale Schumacher assists and Mary Anna Turnroth leads games. The season closes after a 260 attendance fifth basketball dance on Friday February 17 with chairman June Frysinger and Jack Phelps orchestra.

Debaters Travel To Princeton Tuesday

The Sterling S H S debate team heads to Princeton on Tuesday for the second round of conference contests after a win and loss against Mendota on February 23. Judge J W Burland from Rockford officiated with Mendota having defeated Princeton twice, and Sterling aiming to match that feat. The league closes March 11 at North Central College Naperville with a three‑team meet against Sandwich DeKalb and Morris, as Sterling pursues its best year, already placing high in Wheaton and league standings.

Spring Vacation Starts March 31 at Local School

The break begins Friday March 31 and runs through Monday April 10. The board plans to redecorate several rooms and conduct a general overhaul during the flu epidemic inspired vacation period.

District Musical Contest Entries At Sterling In March

Illinois School Band and Orchestra Associations gear up for the District Musical Contest in Sterling on March 18 and 26. Sixteen schools signaled entries for solos ensembles or orchestras with state Champaign eligibility at stake. Judges include Iowa and Illinois educators from Coe College Augustana Davenport High Sigourney and more.

Friedrichs Plans State Future Farmers Broadcast

Warren Friedrichs state president of the Future Farmers of America plans a 15 to 20 minute program on the state Future Farmer program of work and association accomplishments to be presented at the Kinois Vocational Association meeting in Moline Illinois in April. He will chair a committee to discuss sponsoring a leadership camp at Springfield later this year while a teachers group led by Mr Twardock will address the same issue during the Illinois Vocational Association meetings April 14 to 16. Mr Eades departed for Cleveland to attend the national meeting of the American Association of School Administrators and was expected to return tomorrow.
