A lively miscellany from Sterling Township High School covers students in dances and concerts with Santa letters praising school pride. It notes uniforms, GAA enthusiasm, misstatements corrected about Mel Breed, and a winter concert with Chicago performers.
The Spanish Club hosted a Christmas party for Wallace School first graders from Spanish speaking families on Thursday December 10 in the gym. Forty nine children attended with gifts, refreshments and games including a pinata. Santa gave each child a small gift as committee chairs oversaw invitations transportation refreshments gifts decorations games and clean-up.
On Monday December 21 an after school assembly in room 806 addressed college life questions. A panel of SHS alumni spoke including Gail Behrens and Keith Bock as freshmen at UW Madison Wartburg College and Knox College respectively.
Ray Mangan, in his fourth year of varsity wrestling, has twice won NCIC titles at 120 and 133 pounds and placed third in the state at 133. He has wrestled with a broken thumb since the third practice. Greg Kontos, nicknamed “The Greek,” excelled in football, basketball, and track, captained the basketball team, earned the Ken Tauaki Award, and was inducted into the National Honor Society while pursuing college with plans influenced by OSU wrestling.
The Student Librarian Club held its December gathering on Wednesday December 9 at 7 00 p m in the library. The event featured a brief business session and a Christmas party. Members announced approval of adopting a child with soon arriving pictures and details. Pins were awarded to Connie Buhrow Vickie Herndon and Debbie Landheer for 300 hours and to Teresa Beveroth Marilyn Flessner Kathy Miller and Nancy Sawyers for 100 hours with Bonnie Plummer receiving a state pin. Plans included a Christmas card drive for hospital children, a skating party set for January 23, and a February pot luck supper with Junior High librarians as guests. The evening closed with tree trimming games and cookies.
The intramural season opens with 238 participants across 28 teams. Sophomores play at 6 15 and upperclassmen at 7 15 on Mondays Tuesdays and Thursdays with juniors and seniors officiating. Leading scorers include Dave Ladd 91 points and players Fullington Monshower Wolber Helms.
