Sterling residents from S H S depart May 21 at 5 30 a m for a day trip to Chicago. The group tours Mars Inc Kraft Cheese Marshall Field Adler Planetarium Rosenwald Museum and Stevens Hotel dining before a 9 30 pm return trip.

Friedrichs Captures First in Regional Speech Contest
Wayne Friedrichs won the sectional public speaking contest for the third time in as many years. The event at S H S drew six schools including Dixon, Lee Center, Franklin Grove, Amboy, Erie and Sterling. His oration titled The Mandate of the Soil addressed soil erosion and future Farmers roles. Erie took second place and Lee Center third.

S H S Musicians Shine With State Honors
S H S musicians earned state recognition with three eligibles for the Flint regional May 15 and district first division, plus a district winning robed choir. Dorotha Ward Harold Stone LaVerne Hoener and LaVerne McNeil prepare for regional, while Paul Young Julia Heida Virginia Gelaz and Mariann Birch win placements in divisions. The band heads to Glen Ellyn May 2 for state competition and the robed choir follows. judges praised tone, intonation, balance and stage presence.
