The Little Mermaid live action falters in undersea magic
The Little Mermaid remake struggles with photorealism and nostalgia over storytelling. Halle Bailey has a distinct voice but the underwater visuals feel muted and uncanny, with overlong sequences, odd song choices, and less enchanting color and clarity than the 1989 animated version. Two stars.
