Unified track at Hazleton Area highlights inclusion and growth
Hazleton Area hosted a four hour unified track meet with five high schools including Abington Heights and Wyoming Valley West. Valley West won and will advance to the state meet in Shippensburg on May 26 and 27. Hazleton Area plans one more meet on May 17 against Crestwood as it expands unified programs with bocce and intramural sports.

Rescue Plan consultant to keep working for Luzerne
Luzerne County will continue to employ Booth Management Consulting to administer American Rescue Plan Act funding grants as council tabled a vote on renewing the contract. The Maryland firm was hired in June 2022 for ARPA grant administration tied to a $112.9 million funding pool. The three year extension offer valued at $908,392 faced questions about cost and scope, with one-year renewal options and a $125,000 potential reduction proposed by contractor Robin Booth. Council left the matter on the table after Booth said her firm had exceeded the $350,000 not to exceed limit and would cease operations if not renewed. The issue was not moved to the agenda Tuesday.

Torner murder trial details bone fragments and weapons
Prosecutors on the third day of Roberto Torner's murder trial described bone fragments, rusted knives, guns and ammunition found on his properties as they seek clues into the disappearance of Jose Pepe Herran, a 60 year old FBI informant. Herran vanished in fall 2015 and his family and a federal probation officer testified to not hearing from him afterward.
