Personal crisis reports rise in jail checks and suicide watches
Officials describe 15 questions used to flag inmates in personal crisis, with 30 more asked on booking and ongoing screenings by health department workers. Alerts trigger from answers and family calls, while staff may initiate death by own action watches. In past weeks, jail personnel intervened as inmates attempted self harm. The jail holds about 750 of 888 beds, and investigators found no clear cause for recent deaths. Depression and regular counseling demand, but such cases are not daily events.
