The largest American Legion turnout for a film scene occurred in Indianapolis as Legionnaires paraded for the Universal drama Tom Brown of Culver at the Indiana War Memorial Plaza. Ralph Gates led the parade with units from Rochester, Anderson, Clinton, Kokomo, Tipton, and Frankfort, alongside Culver Military Academy honor guards. Tom Brown, Ben Alexander, Richard Cromwell, and Dick Winslow appeared in Culver unit roles. The film, directed by William Wyler, features Tom Brown with H. B. Warner and Slim Summerville.
The Katy railroad reduces the one way fare to half for cotton pickers traveling to Stamford and nearby areas. The Texas Central division fare change takes effect September 23 and was wired to T. J. Bos '08, the local agent, on Wednesday.
Ginning halted in Stamford Thursday due to Wednesday night and afternoon showers after 173 bales were processed this season. Weather is expected to slow further intake, while the cotton market rallied this week from last week’s lows, with prices around 7 cents for strict low middling and 6.95 to 7.40 for strict middling.

A. Huskey, 53, of Moran died in the Stamford sanitarium Monday night from injuries after a fall from a cotton platform at Moran the previous Saturday. He suffered two fractured vertebrae and paralysis from the neck down with no recovery hope. His wife and two sons Alvin and Luther Huskey were at his bedside. Huskey, a gun operator, had lived in Moran 29 years and his body was taken to Moran Tuesday morning.
Henry Smith of Roby visited his sister in Avoca. A steady flow of relatives from Brownfield Portales Siloam Springs Slaton Abilene and Lamesa were listed as visitors or guests. C. W. Williams lay ill but improving as family members gathered at the bedside. Grandmother Powers and Lily Fay Culwell were among those mentioned with various trips and social visits ongoing.
Funeral services for C A Carlson of Ericksdahl east of Stamford were held at his home and at Swedish Lutheran church. He was 59 and died Sunday when crushed under a combine. his body found Sunday afternoon by cotton pickers. Survivors include his wife Esther, his father J B Carlson, brother E W Carlson, and five sisters.
Fred Ross, who preached for the Church of Christ in Stamford for the past year, has resigned and moved to Abilene to be near his daughter and son in college. He will preach part time for two Abilene congregations. The Ross family leaves many friends and the Stamford church regrets their departure.
Jones county commissioners cut county and road district tax rates in district No. 1 and district No. 10. North county residents pay 1.39 total rate vs 2.04 last year, while other areas pay 1.49 vs 2.24. State rate drops to 69 cents, road district No. 1 to 15 cents, road district No. 10 to 25 cents. County assessment for 1932 stands at 12,491,000.
Reese Pratt will speak on "Where We Get Our Money" at the Stamford Exchange Club meeting at noon today. Louis Rosenwasser shares air travel experiences from a New York trip. Wives of Exchangites were guests last week for a dove luncheon with Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Bryant and others.
A delegation of nine from the Stamford unit of Red & White Stores will attend the regional meeting of Red & White merchants in Galveston September 25 26 and 27. Attendees include Dolly Payne H P Moody J W Hellums W A Holt Guy Rosser Tom Haney John Rashepencock and Jess Collier.
The bankrupt stock of the Strauss Drygoods Company was put on sale Thursday morning by B and T Sales Company of Breckenridge. The bank rupt Style Shop of Abilene moved its stock to the Stamford store with Dave Tobolosky in charge.
The body of Mrs. J. L. Ulmer who was killed by lightning near Big Spring Wednesday was brought to Stamford by Kinney Funeral Home. Funeral plans likely at Church of Christ Friday. Mrs. Ulmer's family and relatives are listed. she leaves a husband and son Dale Phillips along with six siblings and four sisters.
Dr. George W. Truett of Dallas will conduct a ten day revival meeting at the First Baptist Church in Abilene beginning Wednesday of next week. Mr. Reynolds of Fort Worth will direct the singing.

Preparations continue for the Jones County Food Exhibit to be held in Anson on Friday and Saturday September 30 and October 1. Miss Sue Bonner home demonstration agent urged attention to the show. Lions Club of Anson sponsors the exhibit with entry products due in Anson by 6 p.m. Thursday September 29 and by 9 a.m. Friday September 30. Entries list appeared in last week's American. copies available at the office.
Entertainment pleased spectators at the amateur rodeo in the Texas Cowboy Reunion arena last Friday afternoon, but attendance was below expectations. United Charities collected 63.10 from the rodeo and 17.15 from the City Auditorium dance, totaling 80.25. The program ran with some performer substitutions and the donkey race omitted.
Hastings H D club pantry demonstrator Mrs. Monroe Reynolds shows an itemized grocery list for the first six months of the year. She feeds a family averaging 7.2 members for $45.77 and notes hive honey sales of over $40 and eggs sold totaling $65.18. Her home operates on a cash basis regardless of field crop outcomes.
Little J. W. Rush aged T years died September 7 at 9 45 p m after a one week illness from diphtheria. He is survived by parents Mr and Mrs O W Rush two brothers Edwin and Virgil five sisters Irene Annie Margie Obera Wynona and one more to mourn. Funeral at graveside September 8 at 3 oclock conducted by Rev Sam Morris. Burial in Fairview cemetery Kinney Brothers in charge pallbearers Coy Turner Rupert Raley Ralph Riddle and C P Amerson flower girls Irma Lee Raley Ruby Marjorie Lou Carlton and Josephine McCoy.
Rev W G Fletcher announces next Sunday's service at the Methodist church. An illustrated sermon will explore the cause of Gandhi's death by his own action and castes and outcasts. Slides from a six months India lecture tour will be shown. Evening subject is Worry Its Cause and Cure.
Native Services will be held at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church on Sunday September 25. The event invites community members to participate and reflect, with service times announced locally.
Dr F E Hudson of Stamford elected president of the Mid West Texas District Medical Association at the convention closing session. Officers named include Dr Chester A Callan Rotan as vice president and Dr Roland Peters Sweetwater as secretary treasurer. The meeting in Stamford featured talks on cardiac pain infection in allergy mortality factors and issues with artificial dentures.
The Texas Cowboy Reunion chuck wagon will travel to Wichita Falls for the Gold en Jubilee this Monday through Wednesday. Loaded on a truck, the wagon will serve meals to invited guests each day of the event.
The McDaniel Drygoods Company owned by Walter and Cecil McDaniel moved Wednesday from the south side of the square to the Astin building on the north side. Walter McDaniel said the new location suits them and they expect higher sales with a fresh fall merchandise stock.
