Four Cotton Leaders Slated for RPCG Meeting in Abilene

Four leaders in cotton agriculture will speak at the Rolling Plains Cotton Growers Inc meet to be held Sept 23 in the Taylor County Coliseum Abilene. The event marks the first RPCG session in Taylor County since 1964 with a 64-member board meeting Sept 22 at the Ramada Inn. Exhibitors include West Texas Utilities Doty Brothers Abilene Area 4 Rural Electric Cooperatives Geigy Chemicals Rolling Plains Compress Farmland Industries and the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Grain Co op Jones Haskell buys Harrison Mickler firm

The Jones Haskell Grain Cooperative completed the transfer of Harrison Mickler Grain Co. and its Avoca elevator after weeks of delay over land lease approvals with Burlington Lines. W B Harrison and Jess Mickler formerly ran Harrison Mickler, formed June 1958, now managed by J R Tidwell at Avoca and Stamford elevator.

Melvin Cagle a driver license patrolman will be in Austin for the week of September 29 through October 4 for in service school The Stamford office will not be open on Tuesday September 30 and Friday October 3 The Anson office remains open Monday through Friday for renewals and written examinations

Abilene Men Sentenced Six Years For Felony Theft

Sammy Grady Conner and Floyd Elvin Stice received six year terms in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to felony theft in 104th District Court in Anson. They admitted taking a hoist from Cooper Welding Works on June 8. They already face six year sentences in Taylor County and are sought in Tom Green County. The Jones County terms run concurrently with the Taylor County sentences.

Dwight Overton Elected Paint Creek FFA President

Dwight Overton was elected president of the Paint Creek FFA at the first meeting of the year held September 8 in H. P. Morrison Memorial Auditorium. New officers include Alex McLellan as vice president Larry Cockerell as secretary Allan McLellan as treasurer Mike Brazell as reporter and Eddie Howeth as sentinel. Delegates chosen were Ricky Brazell and David Ellison with Rick Green as alternate.

Rotarians Plan Spaghetti Meal Before Football Game

The Stanford Rotary Club will host a spaghetti supper Friday night October 3 before the game with Haskell. Proceeds benefit the Community Kindergarten. Directors agreed to donate sixty dollars to the educational program with Ben Loop as chair and O M Isbell Fareed Hassen Jarrell Sharp and John Harrell as assistants.

Four Breakins Being Checked By Sheriff

Jones County Sheriff investigators are probing four break ins Friday night, three in Stamford and one in Avoca. No major loot. at Bronco Seed Co. and Stamford airport thefts included a soft drink machine and clothing items. Beggs Implement Co. saw two machines opened. Avoca Texaco service station reported cigarettes candy gum and a small cash amount taken. Authorities believe the same pair or more may be responsible and continued inquiries.

Charles W. Stenholm of Stamford led a meeting of area cotton leaders urging market growth to keep cotton farming profitable. CPI NCC outlined progress toward durable press fabrics, lower costs, stronger promotion, and a $13 million program with staff from Memphis and Texas.

New Automobiles Displayed In Stamford Thursday

Motorists in Stamford can view 1970 automobiles on Thursday in local showrooms. Most cars feature minor changes, with dealers offering refreshments door prizes and souvenirs. Garrett Chevrolet will unveil the Monte Carlo and others delayed for later dates. Cobrum Motor Co will host Cadillac Oldsmobile Pontiac and Buick models under one roof. Stamford Lake Near Spillway At One Foot From Full

Stamford area saw clear skies earlier but Wednesday brought misty conditions. Rain totaling 1.75 inches since last week fell on Wednesday and night, lifting Stamford Lake to an elevation of 1413.52 feet while the spillway at 1414.6 feet indicates the lake is about a foot from full.
