Lloyd Conatser and Bill Smith linked to Roby Texas slaying of Sheriff R J Smith and deputy Jake Owens. Conatser arrested in Columbus Mississippi after surrendering to Sheriff Z P Goolsby. Smith remained at large heading toward Canada. Conatser says Smith fired the fatal shots during cotton theft transport. Conflicting accounts and interstate tracing by Texas and Abilene sheriffs continued.
The Stamford District of the Methodist Church will hold a six day training school at St John’s Methodist Church from September 18 to 28 with session times at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. BR L Nance assists with the program. Participants from away may stay in Stamford homes and pastors should confirm attendance by September 16. The program covers religious teaching, organization, administration, and Sunday school work.
A fire in Avoca’s cotton yard last Wednesday night destroyed forty two bales of cotton. Stamford fire department aided with its chemical truck, hauled by Conrad Rogers. Funeral services for infant Donald Lee Smith were held at Highland Cemetery conducted by Rev. C W Parmen ter.
The Anson County Board of Education will convene September 12 in the county superintendent's office to decide available funds for scholastics. The teachers institute is set for October 25 27, overlapping the start of most county schools. Stamford has committed participants and more are expected. Thelma Thorp returns home from Canyon.
A man claiming to be H. D. Reid of Lubbock was arrested near Funston Wednesday morning in connection with a Tuesday night attempt to rob a Breckenridge creamery safe. Breckenridge Sheriff Tom Hudson and Deputy A. G. Sanders transported the suspect. Anson officers previously surprised two men in the act. one was killed, the other fled.
G. A. Jones of Cross Plains father of Mrs. L. W. Johnson died at Baylor Hospital in Dallas on Tuesday August 30. The funeral was held at the old home in Hico Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Johnson was en route to Dallas and did not know of his death until her arrival.
The Central Christian Church served as backdrop Wednesday for the marriage of Miss Billy Swafford and Barry L Lacy of Hamlin. The ceremony featured violin and vocals by Mrs RR Robertson and Mrs Harley Goble, with bridesmaids led by Mrs Dallas Southard. The bride wore white satin with rhinestones and carried roses and lilies, as family and friends attended the formal reception at the Southard home.
Band director Dick Rowland says the Stamford Firemen's Band will join Abilene officials and Chamber representatives for Colonel Lindbergh's September 26 visit. The chamber and Fair Association invited the Stamford group and the invitation has been accepted.
Lueders residents enjoyed a river picnic with a day of dining cooking and swimming. Attendees included Johnnie Cauthen Oneta Watts Gladys Sandlin Onetta Lawrence Annette Sandlin Belle Lawrence Fannie Mae Sandlin Janie Webb and Euelah Thompson plus Mrs Guy Price and Mrs Dee Griffiths. Several locals moved to Stamford Fort Worth and Abilene while others traveled for schooling visits and family events in Anson Canyon Ranger Amarillo and Wichita Falls. The YW A of Lueders plans a Saturday meeting at 4 PM with committees named and a farewell gathering for Gertruyd Sharbutt scheduled at Cora Mae Tonrey's home.
Messages from African and South American missionaries will be heard at the First Baptist Church Sunday night at 7:40. Rev CF George his wife and adopted daughter will present the program with prior stops reported in Amarillo and Spur. The event follows recent baptist preaching in West Texas.
The Stamford gas system work is underway with Skaggs Brothers rushing completion. Ditching will rely on pick and shovel. large mains will use ditching machines in the field. Four inch mains are being laid in alleys near the business district. six inch pipe shipment arrived to form a belt around the area. R L Todd joins the gas company and moves his family to Stamford for schooling.
Miss Mary Florence Waggener, Red Cross nutritionist, arrived in Stamford Monday night to lead the local chapter's nutrition program. She will operate from the City auditorium, coordinating a schedule to be announced soon and continuing last fall's work.
