Movement of Maize Totals 230 Carloads
Some 30 carloads of maize have been shipped from Stamford in the past week bringing the total for the first cutting to about 230 carloads. About 90 percent of the first maize harvest is completed with more maturing in two weeks and later harvests every few weeks for months. Gins are ready for the fall cotton season likely to start within two weeks. Cotton ginning not expected before September 20. Jones county reports 115000 acres of cotton and 150000 acres of maize this year.

Pfe Wilburn Sorrell is home on a 40 day furlough and will report to Fort Sam Houston for reassignment on September 18. He has been overseas for a year with the Lith General Hospital at Leominster California. He was in a transportation hospital unit. Sorrell left England August 5 and reached New York August 11 after the crossing lasting four days and 14 hours. He holds the Good Conduct Medal and the European Theater of Operations ribbon. Pvt. George L. Huggins of the Test Battalion 1231st Division, captured by Japanese at Java in March 1942, has been liberated. He is the brother of Mrs. Raymond Hammer of the city.
