Rains Break Heat Wave Aids Cotton Crops

Strong rains eased an in an unseasonably hot period benefiting young cotton. Downtown wind damaged windows and roofs while at least one freight car was moved. Rainfall totals reached 1.24 to 1.33 inches with lingering cool temperatures.

Interest grows as area wide polio oral vaccine program set for Sunday September 16 in Stamford. Two local boys diagnosed with polio spurred turnout with clinics at the city fire station and high school gym. Program includes pre registration through churches and schools, taxi service, potential bus for Negro residents, and a 25 cent suggested donation per dose.

Stamford Boys With Polio Improve After Hospital Transfer

Two Stamford boys, Todd Franklin 20 months and Mike 4 years, both with bulbar polio, were taken off the critical list at Hendrick Memorial Hospital in Abilene after showing improvement. They had been in iron lungs since Sunday and underwent tracheotomy before transfer. their parents are Mr and Mrs Pelham Franklin.

Funeral Service Held on Sunday For J. H. Benton

James M. Benton 87 died Saturday at Stamford Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were Sunday at Oliver Street Church of Christ with ministers Dale King J B Lamb and Bob White officiating. Burial followed at Ruby Cemetery Kinney Funeral Home in charge. Surviving son Joe Benton Stamford and sister Alma Raney Tulsa. Pallbearers listed.

Stamford women apply for work at Feldt plant

Several score women from Stamford and nearby towns filed applications to work at the old Feldt Manufacturing Co plant. Davis Manufacturing Co of Dallas has purchased the plant to produce children's overalls and blue jeans and moved in additional equipment. Representatives visited Stamford last weekend and returned Wednesday to continue accepting applications. The opening time is uncertain but may be early next week.

Eric Grigoleit Rites Held at St. Ann’s Church

Eric A. Grigoleit longtime Oilfield Ignition Co. owner died Sunday at Big Spring Veterans Hospital after six months illness. Born April 14, 1895 in Libau Latvia he married Mary Lucey Matlock July 5 1920. Burial at Elmwood West Cemetery Abilene. Survivors include wife a daughter and seven grandchildren.

Stamford Bulldogs Open Season on Quanah Indians

Stamford High School opens the 1962 football season Friday night against Quanah on Quanah's field.
