Washington School Opens August 25 With 89 Enrolled

Washington Colored school opens August 25 after registration August 23 with enrollment reaching 89. The plan includes a brief harvesting recess after six weeks. New and existing teachers are listed with assignments across grades and departments, and a revised schedule shortens noon hour with school dismissing at 3 45 p.m.

Election Called At Aspermont

An election is set for September 27 in Aspermont by Stonewall County Water Control and Improvement District No 1. Engineers' report estimates a permanent water supply costing not over $390,000, requiring an eight inch line about 22 miles from Tule to Aspermont with $15,000 for wells and $281,800 for 102,700 feet of pipe.

Humble Oil and Refining Co. stakes two offsets to its No. 1 Mrs Pauline Murrie discovery near Lueders in Shackelford County. No. 2 Murine offset spots 330 feet east of the encampment ground on a 100 acre lease. No. 1 offset Henry Lieb on a 370 acre lease. Multiple other wells and wildcats are named in Jones and surrounding counties with depths from 2,200 to 6,500 feet and various leases and surveys.

Rev Underwood Takes Over Purpit Duties During Pastor Illness

Assembly of God Church closes three week revival

The Assembly of God Church of Stamford ended a three week open air revival with strong attendance from locals and out of town visitors. Pastor Res Zearl Am burn led the revival and will begin another open air series at Lueders on September 8 assisted by W Theron Jones. Rev Mr Underwood preached at both hours. The Training Union dramatized The Heroine of Ava with Mrs Truett Black directing and Mr Black on organ. Marda Carlie and Johnny Taylor led.

Water Released from Fort Phantom to Replenish Stamford Supply

Water from Fort Phantom Phill Lake will be released at 4 p.m. Thursday and reach Stamford by 4 a.m. Friday to replenish Stamford’s water reserves. The plan relies on Clear Fork flows for flushing and may provide relief as Stamford and Abilene coordinate supply needs amid ongoing hot weather and rationing. Temperature drop from 110s to 65 degrees accompanied by a dust-laden wind but no rain.

Hamlin to Open Pipe Line Bids September 16

Bids for a Stamford to Hamlin water pipeline estimated at 21 miles of 10 to 12 inch pipe will be opened September 16 at 2 p.m. Mayor Mae Brundage said if the contract is awarded promptly, work could begin once materials are secured. Hamlin currently receives water from Rule and Rochester due to drought depleting its city lake reserves.

A funeral for Mrs Claude Alexander was held Friday in Asher Oklahoma. Her great nephew Jimmy Haas and his mother Mrs Alyeon Haas attended the rites following her death in Norman Oklahoma on Wednesday.

Arrangements Made for Free Chest X-Rays in Stamford

The state Health department will provide free chest X-rays in Stamford and nearby areas with equipment arriving September. The Chamber of Commerce sponsors the effort and Dr. Tom Linkley reports the program will visit Anson and Hamlin on the same trip. Many local residents used the service before and are invited to participate. Further plans will be announced by Dr. Bunkley.

Reynolds School Cafeteria Gets New Dishwasher and Upgrades

Improvements to Reynolds School cafeteria this fall include a new ehootite dishwasher and repair work. Supervisor Mrs J E Massey said with patron cooperation the cafeteria will be better than ever. Teachers and senior high students will pay 40 cents for plates while lower grades stay at 25 cents. Massey recently attended a workshop at Texas Tech in Lubbock on nutrition and balanced meals. She noted no discouragement despite higher prices and subsidy cuts.

Football tickets go on sale at Haskell September 12

Principal Jon Dyer reminded this week that football tickets are on sale here. Reserved seats for the game at Haskell on September 12 will also be available.
