Some fields remain too wet while maize and corn activities are affected by prior frosts and rains. Mrs. Lee Walker notes early demand for assistance and Lions Club volunteers prepare Christmas boxes with aid likely from the community.
Manuel Elias 25 of Stamford and a Vietnam veteran was jailed on $1500 bond after Stamford police officer Louis Johnson arrested him Saturday night on felony possession of marijuana charges. Elias allegedly had a small bag of marijuana in his possession while visiting for Thanksgiving. he has ties to Tennessee but grew up in the area.
Aubrey Headstream describes the Haskell mental health clinic as a community asset serving Haskell Stonewall and Knox counties under Vernon State Hospital. It reduces hospital costs from 330 to 28 per patient yearly, keeping care local and boosting area tax receipts while denying any removal of patients or threat to existing services.
Engineers of the Texas Highway Department outlined Stamford city plans for resurfacing US 277 and State 6 and improving drainage at the northwest corner of the square. City Manager H R Macomber said a two inch overlay would be placed on most highways with contracts let after year start and work slated for next summer. A concrete island cut near the booster sign will help drain excess water toward the center.

Lee R. Williams 78 died at 606 E Vanderbilt Wednesday. Funeral Sunday at Orient Street Church of Christ with J B Lamb officiating. Burial in Spring Creek Cemetery Avoca. Williams Garage operator, WWI veteran, finance officer for Stamford American Legion Post 100. Survivors include wife Florence two daughters six grandchildren and two brothers.
Stamford workers briefing outlined a city housing survey kicking off to identify delinquent properties and classify houses as good fair or poor. Four crews will gather details. data will feed a class action tax suit or city takeover to clean up ramshackle homes.
Stamford Lioness Club will stage a bazaar starting Dec 6 in the former Sun Oil Co. building west of Dobbins Gift Store. For three months members worked on bake goods flowers candles toys and wearing apparel. Proceeds fund scholarships and other service projects led by president Mrs. Glen McCandless.
Miss Arnie Barrett of the Jones County Unit reports memorial gifts totaled 576 for the fiscal year ending August 31, up from 404 in 1971, reflecting growing public support for cancer research. Gifts honor deceased or celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, with acknowledgments sent to designated recipients. Residents of Stamford are urged to send donations to Mrs. R. H. Bounds.
A free immunization clinic for Stamford children is scheduled for Wednesday, December 6 in the High School auditorium. The Texas law requires proof of vaccination for diphtheria tetanus measles polio smallpox and rubella for school entrants and preschoolers against whooping cough. Christmas lights were turned on Tuesday in downtown Stamford and will burn each night through the holidays. Lights go on at 5 30 p m and off at 11 30 or 12 a m with Christmas music during the same hours.
