Happy fans jammed the stands as Stamford Bulldogs defeat Slaten Tigers 30-22 in Snyder to claim bi-district honors. They now set their sights on Fabons in Monahans to push for regional top seeding.
A large outside stack of 600 ton cotton bales burned at Stamford Compress on Saturday. Firefighters fought the blaze from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m.. no machinery was damaged and no injuries were reported. Insurance estimates pending.
Stamford heads to Monahans to play No. 8 Fabens in a state playoff game at 8 p.m. Friday. Fabens star Randy Hodges leads a veteran, quick, offensively explosive Wildcats squad from near El Paso. Tickets, pep rally, and dismissal details announced. travel plans include multiple chartered buses and a student bus.
Jerry Terrell, longtime assistant to the general manager at Stamford Electric Cooperative, resigns to become member service director at Dickens Electric Cooperative in Spur. His last day is Friday, with duties starting Monday. Terrell is a 1951 Paint Creek High School graduate who joined SEC in 1962 and has held multiple positions, including assistant to the general manager since 1976. He and his wife Barbara have four children and three grandchildren, and he will be honored at a dinner by Stamford Electric employees.
Forecasts for rainfall failed to bring moisture and almost 11 000 bales were hauled to eight area gins. Only .11 inch was measured last week, totaling .29 for November and 18.48 for the year. About 7500 bases remained on gin yards Wednesday morning, season total 59 153 with gin names and locations listed.
The Migrant Program and Remedial Reading program parents at Stamford school will host an arts and crafts fair December 3 at 7 p.m. in the Oliver Cafetorium. The event aims to show inexpensive, useful Christmas gifts and invites homemade craft demonstrations for all community residents.
Stamford Youth Center hosts an autograph event for Hooper Shelton’s new book Fifty Years of a Living Legend Texas Cowboy Reunion and Oldtimers Association. The 256 page hardback lists 2753 Oldtimers members, Stamford hostesses, sponsors, and history by Violeta Mahood. prepublication price is 12.50, party runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with coffee and cookies. After Dec 1 the price rises to 14.50.
