Fire destroys hundreds of bales at Stamford Compress

A large outside stack of 600 ton cotton bales burned at Stamford Compress on Saturday. Firefighters fought the blaze from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m.. no machinery was damaged and no injuries were reported. Insurance estimates pending.

Terrell Leaves Stamford Electric for Dickens Cooperative

Jerry Terrell, longtime assistant to the general manager at Stamford Electric Cooperative, resigns to become member service director at Dickens Electric Cooperative in Spur. His last day is Friday, with duties starting Monday. Terrell is a 1951 Paint Creek High School graduate who joined SEC in 1962 and has held multiple positions, including assistant to the general manager since 1976. He and his wife Barbara have four children and three grandchildren, and he will be honored at a dinner by Stamford Electric employees.

Cotton harvest near sixty thousand bale mark

Forecasts for rainfall failed to bring moisture and almost 11 000 bales were hauled to eight area gins. Only .11 inch was measured last week, totaling .29 for November and 18.48 for the year. About 7500 bases remained on gin yards Wednesday morning, season total 59 153 with gin names and locations listed.

Arts and crafts fair slated here Monday

The Migrant Program and Remedial Reading program parents at Stamford school will host an arts and crafts fair December 3 at 7 p.m. in the Oliver Cafetorium. The event aims to show inexpensive, useful Christmas gifts and invites homemade craft demonstrations for all community residents.
