Stamford Bulldogs Fall 25-8 to Eastland Mavericks in Bi District

In Abilene Stamford Bulldogs, outweighed by Eastland Mavericks, held a scoreless first half before succumbing 25-8. Eastland, led by Thomas and King, pulled away after intermission as Stamford fought errors and stout defense from both sides, with Eastland advancing to face Coahoma in Sweetwater.

Ratliff Announces Run for Texas House District 61

Senator David Ratliff of Stamford declares bid for the Texas House seat in District 61 covering Fisher, Jones, Mitchell, Nolan and part of Taylor County. He will remain senator for District 24 during a 1973 budget session, and cites his long service on key committees and local ties to West Texas. Ratliff resides in Stamford with Mrs. Ratliff, who teaches in Lueders. they have four grown children.

Local Rites Held for Felix Rodriguez in Stamford

Funeral service for Felix Rodriguez 35 of 416 S Occident Stamford was held at 3 p m Monday at St Ann s Catholic Church with Rev John Sheeran officiating. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery under Kinney Funeral Home. Rodriguez died 820 a m Sunday in Stamford Memorial Hospital. Born November 20 1936 in Crystal City he married Eugenia Jiminez October 4 1958 in Hale Center and moved to Stamford in 1959. He was a farmer and member of St Ann s Church. Survivors include his wife three children Rudy Cynthia Beatrice all at home his father Tony Rodriguez of Lubbock two brothers Ernest and Tony Rodriquez of Stamford and a sister Mrs Dora Vellaniciva of San Antonio.

Campaign kicks off to add 3000 books for Stamford library

A Pierian Club drive began two weeks ago to raise 3000 more books for the Carnegie Library in Stamford to reach a 10,000 volume goal for a federal grant. About 100 books have been donated in library and Dobbins Pharmacy boxes. call 773-2655 to arrange pickup. Children’s books are especially needed at the primary level.

City to Close Thursday for Thanksgiving

The Stamford Chamber of Commerce designates Thursday November 25 as an official holiday. Most local businesses offices schools post office bank and public offices will close for Thanksgiving while emergency services remain in operation. Anson courthose will close Thursday and Friday for the observance. Stamford residents expect a turkey feast and many will watch televised football games. A Thanksgiving Eve service was held at St Johns United Methodist Church with Rev Joe Aalbue delivering the message.

Vaughan Rites Held Friday at Lueders Church

Funeral services for Edward Burk Vaughan 468 retired farmer were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Lueders Methodist Church. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery Stamford. Vaughan died Wednesday in Campbell Hospital Weatherford. He was born October 27 1903 in Greenville and moved to Lueders in 1919. He served in World War II and was married to Effie Mae Stamp in 1944. Survivors include his wife son Eddie sister Irene Knoble and brothers F C Vaughan and N C Vaughan. Pallbearers were T B McNair Glenn Stanford Glenn O'Dell Delbert Moore J C Wills and A L Mullins.

City Manager H R Macomber reports Paint Creek Water Supply Corp plans FHA loan to build a 157 customer rural system in southern Haskell County serving areas along Highway 277 and Lake Stamford. Project cost estimated at 244980 with 234000 loan and 10980 local contribution. contract negotiations to follow. Stamford to host Bulldog Day after approval of related measures.

Audit Highlights Operating Fund Strain in Stamford Schools

Stamford Independent School District trustees approved an audit for 1970 71 prepared by James Rodgers showing tight operating funds. Superintendent Beene cites heavy maintenance and repairs on aging buildings as a cause, with time warrants of 40000 issued to fund summer classroom additions. The debt must be paid in five years from local funds without a bond issue. The high school auditorium is a major exception to aging facilities. Diana Eoff resigns as social studies teacher effective December 31 as her family moves to Medina where her husband takes a job at a children's home.

Stamford gains Olivers The New Place a general department store in the former J C Penney Co. building. Neal Oliver, former Penney manager, oversees a full remodel with brand name merchandise for families and a Teen Trap area. Opening date is pending stock completion.

Couple Welcomes Daughter Carmen Maria in San Antonio

Mr and Mrs Jim FitzGerald of San Antonio are the parents of daughter Carmen Maria born November 12. Grandparents are Senora Teodolinda Vda de Ostolaza of Lima Peru and H S FitzGerald of Pikeville Kentucky formerly Stamford. Mrs FitzGerald remains in San Antonio with her son and family. Mr FitzGerald will fly in for Christmas.
