Four County group forms to combat salt water pollution

About 45 residents from Anson Aspermont Avoca Roby Fotan Abilene Hamby Old Glory Merkel Lueders and Stamford met at City Hall to organize the Mid at a meeting Tuesday night aimed at fighting salt water pollution affecting water and farmland. A. C. Humphrey of Stamford was named chairman of a 16 member governing committee with county judges and commissioners from Jones Fisher Stonewall and Taylor counties as advisory across counties.

Twelve Indictments Returned By Grand Jury

The grand jury of the 104th District Court in Anson returned twelve indictments for crimes including murder burglary forgery passing theft and second offense driving while intoxicated. Named in murder counts are Joe Lopez Ramon Cedillo Seledonio Ramones Delgado Besse Cedillo Raymon Gallardo and John Macias. Other defendants face charges of assault with intent to murder assault with a prohibited weapon and related counts.

Poll Tax Receipts Rise in Jones County

Poll tax payments increased after voters rejected a proposed amendment to abolish the tax. Despite the uptick, many residents still do not qualify to vote in the 1964 elections. Before Nov. 1 fewer than five receipts were issued. by Monday the total reached 189.

County to condemn six tracts for 277 widening project

County officials move to condemn six properties for the 277 highway widening between Stamford and Anson. Ten deeds remain, with M. E. Carothers progressing as right of way agent. A three member jury will value the parcels, with state and county share funding details outlined.

Missionary Will Speak Sunday at First Baptist

Dr. Keith Parks a missionary to Indonesia will address the morning and evening services at First Baptist Church this Sunday. He recently spoke at the Texas Baptist Convention in San Antonio and previously served as evangelist at First Baptist Church in Abilene in September. He is the nephew of Mr. and Mrs. E L Cowger of Stamford.

Rainfall Totals Surpass November Average in Stamford

Showers Monday night and Tuesday brought Stamford 1.20 inches, lifting November total to 2.33 inches. U.S. Weather Bureau observer Cleburne Huston recorded the event, with outlying gauges noting up to 2.0 inches. The prior rain fell on Nov 8 at 1.13 inches, as November average is 1.44 inches. Total yearly rainfall stands at 17.23 inches, still below the 23.22 inch average for the first 11 months.

Six Latins Indicted for Meza Slaying in Anson

Six defendants ranging from 12 to 18 were indicted for the November 10 murder of Antonio Meza in Anson. The youths admitted beating the 55 year old farm laborer after a drinking party and stole $1.43. Arrests followed days of police, sheriff, and state liquor control investigation.

Jones Heads Quarterback Club In Season Close

Officers for the coming year were elected Tuesday night at the Quarterback Club’s final meeting of the season. Doc Jones was named president, L. D. Jones became vice president, and Joseph High was re elected secretary treasurer.

Stamford Independent School District to vote on $300000 auditorium bonds

Voters in the Stamford Independent School District will decide Saturday whether to issue $300,000 in bonds for a new auditorium and administration building. The project would add seating for 803 permanent and 1100 plus temporary seats, include offices, and may raise taxes about 9.5 cents per $100. Absentee ballots were light as of Tuesday. Officials presiding include Reginald Baird, Norris Russell, Bartlett Holland, and Richard Lane.

County to Bid on Jones County Valuation Survey

Cutting Horses to Compete Near Stamford Saturday

The National Cutting Horse Association sponsors a contest at Bobby Wedeking Training Stables south of Stamford. Top horses from across the nation are expected with as many as 80 entries.
