Cotton Farmers Meet in Stamford Discuss Marketing and Weevil Diapause

About 100 area cotton farmers gathered in Stamford to hear talks on marketing, new trailer lighting rules, and the boll weevil diapause control program. Speakers from Texas A&M and local gins outlined marketing plans, harvest prospects, and program details. A Jones County meeting was set for Thursday at 7:30 pm in Anson to advance a countywide diapause organization.

Goodfellows Fund Begins in City Stamford

The Christmas Goodfellows Fund in Stamford starts under Stamford Lions Club with Weldon Holbrooks as chairman. Donations of clothing toys and cash aid local families needing a merry Christmas. Dropoffs at West Texas Utilities office or chamber of commerce second floor city hall. Names of families or elderly in need to chamber office.

Emmitt Lovvorn Dies at 80 in Stamford

Emmitt A Lovvorn 80 of Stamford died early Sunday at his home after a life in the Corinth community and a 1963 move to Stamford. Funeral Tuesday at First Baptist Church with burial in Highland Cemetery. Survived by wife Frankie, two sons Orbie and Glynn of Stamford, two brothers T J and E B, four sisters and three grandsons.

C-C Delegates Will Attend WTCC Meeting

Roy Arledge and Bill Koon will attend WTCC mid-year board meeting November 18-19 in San Angelo. O C Fisher will give a luncheon address. Koon and Clyde Westfall also attended the Brazos River Basin Salt Pollution study meeting in Abilene on November 17. Koon attended the Governor's Conference on Tourist Development November 10-11 in Arlington, climaxed by an awards presentation led by Gov. Preston Smith.

United Fund Drive Gains Momentum

After a slow start the Stamford United Fund drive shows momentum with about 3000 raised toward a 14000 quota. Eight firms have 100 percent employee contributions including Southwestern Bell Telephone, Stamford Electric Cooperatives Assn, Rolling Plains Production Credit Assn, Stamford American Beggs Wholesale Hassen's Stamford Produce and Stamford Federal Savings & Loan Assn. Residential solicitation starts next week with completion targeted within two weeks. Fourteen agencies participate.

Paint Creek School Expands With 3 New Rooms

Paint Creek Rural School completes an 85 by 30 foot Kirby steel addition at an estimated cost of 30,500 to house home economics, special education, and kindergarten. Construction by Paul Bonine of Abilene at 24,500 with 6,000 in new equipment. The expansion relieves crowding, brings total rooms to 13 for 109 students. Open house to be announced. district eyeing a vocational program.

Funeral Held Here Sunday for Mrs Andrews

Funeral for Bobbie Lee Andrews, 64, was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Church of Christ with Minister Robert Horn officiating. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery. She died Thursday at Stamford Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Survivors include her son Morris Harris of Stamford, a brother Jimmy Griffin of Bronte, three sisters Isabella Childs of Bronte, Johnnie Griffin and Annie May Horn of Stamford, and one grandchild.

Bryant to Fill Pulpit at First Baptist Church

Rev Byron Bryant, former Stamford pastor and university relations aide at Hardin Simmons, will fill the pulpit at First Baptist Church Abilene for both Sunday services on November 21. Morning service at 10 55 a.m. and evening service at 7 p.m. Pastor Rev Jack Southerland began ten days of therapy in Dallas and is reported doing pretty good.

Harvey Wills Dies Monday Of Heart Attack

Harvey Wills 58 died at 4 15 a m Monday in Stamford Memorial Hospital from an apparent heart attack. Funeral was 2 p m Wednesday at Lueders First Baptist Church with Rev W L Trice officiating. Burial in Funston Cemetery. Born Oct 7 1913 in Lueders he married Lorene Sutzer Jan 8 1938. He was a farmer and lifelong Lueders resident. Survivors include two sons Milton of Arnett Okla and Richard of Lueders and four brothers Jimmy Murry G T Claude.

Sharp to Study In England In January

The Rev. Jarrell Sharp of St. John's United Methodist Church Stamford will spend January in England studying with a West Texas group sponsored by McMurry College Abi line. The topic From the Puritan Revolution to the Wesleyan Revival will be taught at Cambridge Oxford and Canterbury universities. They depart January 1 and return January 28 with expenses covered by the congregation and the conference. Mrs Sharp stays home with the children.

Jones County commissioners approve contract with Ed Cockrell of Abilene to collect delinquent taxes for 15 percent of receipts. They adopt a valuation schedule for items such as billboards irrigation wells and small home sites. Darla Faulks hired tax office at 250 monthly rising to 265. Lueders-Avoca Names Royalty At Football Game

Sharia Gilley was named Lueders-Avoca Football Sweetheart and Keith Henderson Pac Squad Hero during half time as the Raiders hosted Benjamin. Sharia, a junior forward on the LA girls basketball team, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Gilley. Keith, a senior, plays split end for the Raiders, son of Mr and Mrs Jack Henderson. The Raiders are set to play Paint Creek Thursday evening.
