Halfway Cotton Harvest Nears Milestone in Stamford Area

Stamford area farmers report one of the largest cotton crops, with some fields at two bales per acre. Gins note about 50 percent harvested and a three week window if weather stays favorable. USDA classing shows most fiber in desirable ranges with extensive middling to strict low middling grades and staple lengths mainly 15 16. Prices over government loan rise about 1.75 to 3 dollars per bale depending on grade.

Murder Trial Opens Monday in Stamford

Johnny Vasquez of Stamford will go on trial Monday in 104th District Court in Anson on a murder charge. He is accused of shooting David Munoz the night of February 26 in downtown Stamford after an argument with Joe Rodriguez of Avoca. Munoz, hit in the chest by a .32 caliber automatic, died at Stamford Memorial Hospital.

Steps For Forming A Junior College In Area

About 50 people from Jones Has kell Threckmoerten and Stonewall counties heard Dr. David Norton outline steps to create a five county junior college district. Norton described a 12.5 million valuation and 7,000 scholastics need, with a 30 cent per 100 valuation tax rate, and stressed voter participation to establish a district governed by elected trustees.

Thanksgiving Service Held at Trinity Church

Stamford High Band to perform in two events this weekend

Stamford High School's Bulldog Band will travel to Andrews for a bi district football game Friday night and then perform in Big Spring for the Region VI University Interscholastic League marching festival Saturday. Director W E Mayes notes the band will stay overnight in Big Spring after the game.

Trial ends in hung jury in Pena assault case

A jury in 104th District Court Anson could not reach a verdict in the assault with intent to murder case against James Pena of Aspermont. Judge Owen Thomas ordered a mistrial for Pena regarding the March 20 incident with Lorenzo G. Lopez near Hamlin. No new trial date has been set.

Cotton farmers vote December on upland cotton research order

Upland cotton producers will vote December 5 through 9 by mail ballot to approve a proposed research and promotion program funded by a one dollar per bale assessment. The order, proposed by the National Cotton Council, would be administered by a Cotton Board and financed through assessments collected by designated cotton handlers.

Lions Club Door-To-Door Drive For Muscular Dystrophy

Katy Railroad Hearing Delayed

The Inter State Commerce Commission has postponed indefinitely a hearing on Katy Railroad's petition to abandon service between Stamford and Bellmead near Waco. The hearing, which was to be held Monday in Fort Worth, has no new date set.

Stamford community organizers launch the Goodfellow plan to fund a full holiday program for the needy. Clubs and churches pledge support to collect clothing food baskets and toys. Area grain farmers are invited to hear progress on forming a grain co operative with a meeting at 8 p.m. Monday in the Council Room City Hall. Proposed by laws will be considered and financing plans discussed.
