Residents adjacent to Stamford city limits south and east will meet with the city council Friday to discuss annexation. The council has debated the matter following a Stamford Hospital Board request to include the hospital area. Letters were sent to property owners near highway 380 and to West Wind Circle residents.
Funeral services were conducted for 66 year old R. W. Moore in the Kinney Chapel with Rev. Don Harms officiating. Burial followed at High and Memorial Cemetery. Justice of the Peace Roscoe Hood ruled Moore died by his own hand. Moore was born November 4 1900 in Merkel attended Merkel High School and worked for Southwestern Bell and West Texas Utilities retiring in 1967. He married Helen Gilbert in Saginaw on June 20 1948. Survivors include his wife a son Bobby Glen of China Springs eight grandchildren and four sisters.
A five member committee will meet Monday to wind up the chamber of commerce membership drive chaired by John Martin. Martin reported $5456 pledged so far with many prospects not renewed. At the directors meeting on Wednesday Roy Engram Leroy Strickland Charles Stenholm Marvin Hinds and Jim West will serve on the committee.
Two chartered bosses will take members of the Stamford Reh School band to Odessa Saturday for the Interscholastic League marching contest. Band instructor W. E. Mayes said only marching competition will be held Saturday with playing to follow later.
Woodie Beene presents Governor's Committee on Public School Education report to Rotary Club. The film screened at the meeting and Beene and Hamlin schools superintendent Foster Cook answered questions afterward.
County Judge Leon Thurman granted a continuance Tuesday in the trial of O. B. Cox charged with assaulting a peace officer. The incident followed an altercation early Sunday morning October 20 with Woodrow Simmons Anson city marshal and sheriff elect who suffered a dislocated arm in the fracas.
Government data show 392 active business firms in Jones County with 94 percent employing fewer than 20 workers. Social security payrolls rose to 7.864 million dollars from 7.132 million in 1965, indicating growth in local employment and firm size.
Two driving while intoxicated guilty pleas were heard in 104th District Court Anson by Judge Owen Thomas. Matthew Lee Edwards of Abilene was fined 350 dollars for second offense DWI. Eppllio Espinosa of Abilene had his charge reduced to a misdemeanor with a 200 dollar fine and a probated 6 month jail term. Several other criminal cases set for Monday were postponed. A jury panel was ordered to return Wednesday. Walter Alvin Ratliff of Abilene has trial for murder set for Monday. Ratliff is charged with shooting Wade Ford in front of the VFW Hall in Anson on June 28.
Mrs Shugart sister of Henry Kinney and O A Kinney of Stamford died after a long illness in Dallas. Funeral services were held Wednesday at First Baptist Church in DeLeon for Mrs L A Doll Shugart.
Miss Maurine Turner, a Stamford schoolteacher, has returned home after eye surgery in Dallas and is reported to be in satisfactory recovery.
Stamford sits atop District 7A with a half game lead as Ballinger visits the Bearcats in a key Friday night showdown. Ballinger and Anson shared a 6 6 tie earlier. Ballinger looks to rebound from two pre conference losses while Stamford eyes a bid to meet Granbury. The Bearcats rely on Yarnell and a solid ground game led by Travis and Buchanan with receiver Jernigan and defenders Booth and Brown.
The Jones County Commissioners Court announced Thanksgiving and Christmas closures for courthouse staff. The courthouse will close November 28 and 29 for Thanksgiving, with a Christmas party December 24 at 11 a.m. and offices closed through December 27. New officials will be sworn in January 1, including Woodrow Simmons as sheriff and Louis Johnson as tax assessor collector.
The 104th District Court grand jury returned six felony indictments on Thursday. Names include Jess Menutt charged with murder with a motor vehicle for a deadly Oct 12 hit and run in Stamford. James Pena indicted for assault to murder with malice over a stabbing of Tony Escobedo. Fay Cunningham faces felony theft after a prior consideration. James Ronnie Clemons indicted for burglary at Buddy Galloway service station. Charles Barron charged with second theft count tied to a check swindle. Holly Wynn Baird indicted for second offense driving while intoxicated.
The public is invited to a Thursday night pep rally at 7 30 to cheer the Bulldogs before the District playoff against Ballinger Stamford. The event will be led by the cheerleaders. Miss Margaret Crockett, a Stamford High teacher retired for years, is in Stamford Memorial Hospital in critical condition after a stroke.
Light rain fell in Stamford totaling 0.4 inches marking the first measurable moisture since October. Abilene and southern areas saw snow as temperatures dipped below freezing and a heavy frost occurred. Harvesting of the large cotton crop was delayed a few days though gins did not fully recover in the interval.
Three members of Stamford's official family and their wives attended the Texas Municipal League meeting in Dallas this week. City Manager Kerry Sweatt and Councilmen E. B. Harkins and Grady Cozby were present.
Rainfall in Haskell for October totaled 0.91 inches, below the 2.27 inch October normal. Despite the short October, the year 1968 remains above normal for rainfall overall.
Mrs J M Ruby Mickler died and was buried at Highland Cemetery pending rites at Paint Creek Church with Rev Les White officiating. Born Ruby Wright in 1879 she married J M Mickler in 1896 and lived in Jones County since 1999. Surviving include son Jess and four daughters, 24 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren. Grandsons served as pallbearers.
Stamford Hospital District will not receive further Hill-Burton funds this year as the Texas Department of Health stated insufficient money to grant $125,000 for Stamford Memorial Hospital. The district had sought aid amid a $1,000,000 project cost, with a bond issue of $260,000 and an application for half that amount.
