Carhartt Factory Aims to Open in Stamford by Dec 1

Carhartt Manufacturing plans a women's sportswear plant in Stamford with about 25 workers to start by December 1. Tom Maloney, new Stamford manager, inspected 40 sewing machines and said the operation could grow to 100 workers in six months, contingent on local labor supply and potential shifts in production lines.

Stamford voters aligned with Texas statewide results by backing Proposition No 2 in city hall and high school polling, while opposing Propositions No 1 3 and 4. In Jones County 815 cast ballots and 937 in Haskell County with mixed outcomes for poll tax welfare and veterans land fund amendments.

Slaying Suspects Questioned in Farm Worker Death

Stamford police and Jones County Sheriff Department continued questioning suspects in the beating death of 55 year old farm worker Antonio Meza found near Partners' Co op Guns labor barracks last Sunday. Meza died from chest injuries after a fight. a roommate's polygraph test was inconclusive as investigators seek leads with help from DPS officers. Funeral services were held in Mart Texas. Meza left four sons six daughters and a wife survives him.

Post-Inspection Report Kills Hopes for Flood Control Dams

An inspection team from the U S Soil Conservation Service and the State Conservation Board told a 26 person gathering in city hall that California Creek’s flat terrain makes dam construction infeasible. They noted only six possible dam sites, which would protect just 20 percent of watershed land, and that a channel improvement plan would fail federal requirements and incur high maintenance costs. The steering committee disbanded, ending hopes for flood control. California Creek runs from near Anson to Lake Stamford, feeding Paint Creek and the Brazos system.

Vote Canvass Set Friday By Jones County Officials

Jones County Commissioners will meet in a special session Friday to canvass returns of the special constitutional amendment election held Saturday. Many ballot boxes had not submitted their returns to Anson when the court met in regular session Monday.

Rainfall Totals Spark Wheat Planting After Dry Spell

First meaningful rain since early September fell last Friday totaling 1.13 inches at the station. Heavier amounts were logged in outlying gauges. The 1.13 reading was recorded by Cleburne Houston, U S Weather Bureau observer, easing range fire fears and enabling farmers to begin wheat planting. a day earlier, a large range fire burned across Haskell County land northeast of Stamford.

Tax payments rise in Stam ford County Line ISD

Through October 31, 77.91 percent of district taxes were paid totaling $133,677.27. The rate marks the highest October collections in five years, said R. L. Hall, tax assessor-collector, at a board meeting. Superintendent H. S. FitzGerald noted October collections were the largest for the month in five years.

New owners take over Charlie's Pit Bar-B-Q and rename it G's Truck Stop at 1102 North Swenson. The facility, built last spring by Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Holcomb, will offer sample style meals under CG's new management.

Auditorium Bond Vote Scheduled for Nov. 23

Stamford County line Independent School District voters head to the polls on November 23 to decide a $300000 bond issue for an auditorium and administration building. Absentee ballots are available now through November 1. If approved the project includes 500 seat capacity, year round air conditioning, offices for the superintendent nurse and tax collector, and will be financed with a tax rate increase up to 1 cent per 100 valuation. The First of Texas Corporation will handle bond sales if approved.
