With six precincts outstanding, Jones County voters rejected a wolf trapper and most amendments. A proposed district court venue change and lunacy trials without juries won support, while many other amendments failed. Foxes in remaining boxes may shift totals.
Santa Claus arrives in Stamford November 25 to officially open Christmas shopping. The parade starts about 2 30 pm with the Stamford band and other groups. Santa will ride into town, hand out candy to children, and be on the streets each Saturday and the three days before Christmas. The Retail Trades Committee plans Christmas lights and tree decorations with local merchants funding repairs and candy buys.
Ted Myers, local insurance man, spoke at the Rotary Club Armistice Day program. Introduced by Tommie Rector, Myers recounted an oral bombing mission over Berlin from the war era, detailing the Air Force target decision and the crews returning to England.
Mrs Hubert Watson president of the Pierian Club will serve as delegate to the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs convention in Austin November 16 17 and 18 She travels with Mrs Fred Borach Jr of Munday first vice president of First District and will join other First District club presidents New state officers will be elected at the convention An entertainment tea will be held at the governor's mansion
Johnny Ivy son of Mr and Mrs John M Ivy of Paint Creek community is listed as a medical patient at Stamford Sanitarium.
Mr and Mrs Holland Griggs and children Lance and Sue visited Wichita Falls on Thursday with Mrs Gripes father Z A Jeter and sister Mrs Peggy Smith and her children Johnny and Jerry They took the children to the Shrine circus On Sunday they visited Jackboro with another sister Mrs V R Akins and family joining the Wichita balls relatives there
Mrs. M C Dillard of Stamford Rt. 2 is a patient at the Stamford Sanitarium receiving medical care.
Mrs. Jim Newman Jr. underwent a minor operation at the Stamford Sanitarium and is improving.
Mrs Glen Durst of the Futercan Club Fort Worth was installed president of the First District Texas Federation of Music Clubs at the Friday session of the 25th annual Stamford convention. Mrs George Rollins was elected recording secretary. Other officers include Mrs H Le Davis Rotan vice president Mrs Fitel Allen Nelson Wichita Falls treasurer Mrs L B Howard Stephenville parliamentarian and Mrs Carl Ramsey Olney auditor. The corresponding secretary will be appointed by the president and the historian by the executive committee.
Mr and Mrs J May entertain guests including Rev V May and his wife from Mercedes. They have visited before and Rev Mr May had died at the First Baptist Church. Also visiting on Sunday was Mrs Ratliff, an aunt from Sweetwater, to see the two men.
The State Production and Marketing Administration plans a cotton referendum on December 15, 1949 in every cotton growing county. National acreage allotment set at 21,000,000 acres. state and county figures to farmers before the vote. Domestic needs and exports set base with a 21,000,000 acre minimum for 1950.
Community Chest officials report contributions between Monday and Wednesday morning amounting to 11,318.82 dollars. Less than 100 dollars had been reported so far, and workers are urged to turn in all funds. Jaycees continue compiling lists of those previously overlooked, with contributions still accepted at John Willoughby’s office.
Lucian Lloyd Loop 80, longtime Stamford resident since 1904, died Tuesday at 3 35 am at the family home after years of ill health. Funeral set for Wednesday 3 pm at Stamford Church of Christ with Dr. Ashley and Rev. Charles Hill officiating. Burial in Highland Cemetery. Born May 24 1869 in Chatfield Texas he married Bertha Mae Curtis in 1894 and they celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary in 1941. He served as church elder and school board president and was an early blacksmith. Survived by his wife three daughters two sons eleven grandchildren two great grandchildren two sisters a brother and numerous relatives.
Mr and Mrs Alton Cliett of Fort Worth spent last weekend with relatives of Mrs Cliett. The brief note records a family visit and travel details among local social circles.
Tom Mathis retired on pension after the Doodle Bug service ended on the Wichita Valley line. O F Wilson and J B Lee moved to the Stamford to Wichita Falls locals, with Jim Hamrick taking an engineer’s role on one local. A Jeter shifted to a switch engine in Wichita Falls as changes ripple through crews. Otto McCormick now runs the Stamford to Abilene local, while Tom Green becomes a Wichita Falls to Stamford brakeman and Scrap Lyons moves to the Wichita Falls to Stamford brake run.
The Arledge ranch sale near Seymour Monday saw a bred heifer top at 1900 paid by Frank Jones of DeCentur and by Payne and Seay of Pawhuska. 55 head averaged 604 dollars. Roy Arledge of Stamford and Henry Arledge of Seymour own the ranch. A designer was born to Mr and Mrs Edmond Davis Jones weighing eight pounds six and a quarter ounces on November 1.
The Stamford Bulldogs face the Anson Tigers in an annual grudge game at Bulldog Stadium on Friday. Tickets are on sale at school offices and at the field entrance before kick off. Game time 2 20.
City Hall reports a drop in meter take during the past week. Receipts fell from a high of 494 to just over 400 as machine counting and wrapping faced a wrapper shortage. Officials cite continued clear weather keeping farmers and cotton pickers in the fields as a key factor.
Hub bert Bell opened a new grocery store on the Avoca highway drawing a larger crowd than planned. Coffee for adults and candy for children were served, and groceries were given away hourly with a bicycle awarded at five. The building features ample parking and floral decorations.
James Hall was elected president of the Stamford Chapter of the Future Farmers of America at a Friday meeting held October 8. Eugene Lyckman became first vice president with Charles Gary as second vice president and Gerald Vasek as third vice president. Other officers include Spencer Baize treasurer Reginald Link secretary Eugene Coleman reporter Kenneth West parliamentarian Bobby Jean West historian Tommy Joe Johnson sentinel and Jimmy Bland song leader. Gerald Proctor serves as chapter advisor.
Rev A G Abbott of Fort Worth leads a revival at Central Christian Church with services nightly at 7 30 except Saturday. Rev M C Turpin assists and W J Mayes directs singing. Abbott is state evangelist for the Texas Christian Missionary Society after leaving Electra Christian Church to pursue evangelism. All are invited to attend for spiritual renewal.
Two cars collided at the intersection of Farm to Market Road and Hamilton Street Tuesday at 5 pm. Drivers James Savage and Morton Robins in one car and Jerry Leavitt in the other escaped serious injury. All three received first aid and were dismissed. Stamford police investigated the incident.
A group from Stamford including Grady Bowdry W G Swenson Dr Almous Blackwell L W Johnson George Smith and Henry Andresw traveled to Holyoke Colorado for a pheasant hunt. Bowdry and Blackwell will pause in New Mexico on their annual deer hunt before the rest head home.
Deposits at First National Bank push toward 6 million with a peak near 7 million expected by January. Bank sees 1949 year end around December as cotton harvests continue and farmers sell held cotton. Farmers have paid about 75 percent of farm loans, and daily deposits have reached 500 thousand on several days while total clearances top 1 million on some fall days.
The Jaycees will assist Santa Claus in candy handouts on November 25 at 2:30 as he rides into town to open the Christmas season. Lee Walker spoke at Doug's Cafe urging Jaycees to aid in distribution and committees were formed for future activities. Dudley Jarrett reported over $100 collected for the Community Chest Drive. Eighteen members and guests attended the noon meeting.
Cotton ginned in Stamford this season reached 11 135 bales by noon Wednesday. Gin yards were packed with trailers awaiting ginning as gins ran around the clock to speed the harvest. Field workers stored up money during the sunny spell while awaiting final gathering.
Rev. Charles E. Fike of St. John's Methodist Church will address Armistice Day Friday morning at the American Legion hall. The event opens at 10 15 with a sing song led by W J Buie and C T Dodson at the piano. Ex servicemen invited to attend with open house 9 am to evening.
Armistice Day schedule features a 9 a.m. open house at the American Legion hall and a memorial service from 10:15 to 11 a.m. A football game between Anson and Stamford is set for 2:50 p.m. A community roundup at the Round Up Hall includes a pet parade, amateur contest, big parade at 11 a.m., high school bands, barbecue at the Legion hall, saddle horse contest at 1 p.m., and a Rule vs Woodson football game at 2 p.m. Pre Armistice Day dances are planned at the Ru Legion hall.
Mrs. Clay Herring traveled to Velasco Tuesday night to visit her daughter Mrs. Jan Breevy Cox and Mr. Cox. Herring then went to Fort Worth Wednesday to spend a while with them and to visit his daughter and her family.
