Mrs J L Rucker's Nephews Figure in War Developments

Two nephews of Mrs J L Rucker have appeared in overseas war news. Major Horace S Carswell Jr of Fort Worth piloted a B 24 that destroyed a Japanese cruiser and sank a destroyer in an enemy convoy heading for Formosa. Staff Sergeant William W Rousey was wounded on July 3 near Cherbourg but has returned to duty.

Adcock Receives Flight Officer Appointment

Luther E. Adcock of Stamford graduated from Ellington Field in the Air Transport Command and was appointed flight officer with rating of service pilot. He and his wife Jesfie Smith and daughter Mary Helen reside in Stamford. Preston M. McCoy of Glenrose, Texas, formerly Stamford, earned the Distinguished Unit Badge for his China India Burma theater service with the 4th Troop Carrier Squadron, Twelfth Air Force.

Stamford Votes Strongly For Roosevelt In Town Election

In Stamford the general election drew 1 185 votes, Roosevelt ahead nearly four to one. Democrats led with 909 ballots, Republicans 129, Texas Regulars 108, America First 1. east box 964 votes, west box 221. Pickens wins Democratic bid for 125th district. Amendments on pensions and county tax reallocation pass with narrow margins.

Professionals discuss their fields at Rotary luncheon

Otis Vance the pharmacist and Perry Stiegler the funeral director spoke on their careers at the Rotary Club event. K. K. Francis led the program and introduced the speakers. Stiegler outlined licensing steps for ambulance driving, funeral directing and embalming while Vance reviewed pharmaceutics history and current regulations. Rev. Miles B. Hays chaired as president was absent. A transportation committee was named to move the High School pep squad and band to the Anson football game Friday night.

County Quota Exceeded in United War Chest Drive

A. M. G. Swenson and A. C. Humphrey report a successful United War Chest drive in Jones County and the Stamford area. The Stamford section quota was 5575 dollars and all ten Stamford communities met or exceeded it. The county-wide goal of 11604 dollars had already been surpassed by midweek. final county count pending.

Barrow Enlarges and Redecorates Chapel of Funeral Home

The Barrow Funeral Home chapel is being enlarged and redecorated this week. Floor space roughly doubles to seat about 125, with dedicated areas for piano, choir, pallbearers, flower girls, and the family. Interior refinishing is in white. W. N. Kinney leads the project.

Roosevelt secures a fourth term while Senator Harry S Truman is elected vice president in a sweeping Democratic victory. Democrats gain control of both houses with 25 states and 413 electoral votes for Roosevelt Truman. 15 states and 118 votes for Dewey Bricker. Youth Center Opens Saturday with Open House

The Youth Center will hold an open house Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. at the library building. Mrs. R. E. Hall says all high school students are welcome for games songs and refreshments in a come and go event. Leaders urge donations of croquet sets ping pong tables and balls to outfit the center.

Death of R. W. Cole Jr. at Symonds Place

R W Cole Jr 33 of this city died Monday at the family home in Symonds Place after a year of ill health. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Rule with burial in Rule cemetery. Born October 7 1911 in Rule he is survived by wife, two children, four brothers, three sisters, and his parents. Stamford attendees included Mr and Mrs E Yates, Mr and Mrs L M Hardy, Mr and Mrs Hugh Astin, and Mrs Gordon Haynes.

Stamford district ministers and lay delegates attend the Northwest Texas conference in Sweetwater where pastor assignments for the coming year will be made. Dr Sam Young leads district reports on benevolences and membership gains. Scouts to Collect Paper in North Town Saturday
