Staff Sgt. Dewey S. Stubbs Jr., 22, of Stamford Texas, waist gunner on a B 17 Flying Fortress with the Eighth Air Force, has been awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal for meritorious achievement during heavy bombing assaults over Germany and occupied Europe.
Cherry Point North Carolina Marine Staff Sgt Johnny E Wilkins son of Mrs B C Wilkins Route 2 Stamford Texas has been promoted from sergeant He serves in the aviation supply section and has served at Pearl Harbor Guadalcanal and New Zealand He holds the Presidential Unit Citation.
Sergeant Harold G McCown of Leeders Texas has been promoted to staff sergeant while serving with the Fifth Air Force in the Southwest Pacific. His brother Aubrey serves at Fort Rosecrans California.
Marine Sergeant Major Troy Cameron of Dublin Texas arrives at the Klamath Falls Marine barracks for treatment after overseas service. He is son of Mrs Dona Alexander of Stamford Texas and veteran of Samoa Ellice Island and the Marshall Islands.
Two nephews of Mrs J L Rucker have appeared in overseas war news. Major Horace S Carswell Jr of Fort Worth piloted a B 24 that destroyed a Japanese cruiser and sank a destroyer in an enemy convoy heading for Formosa. Staff Sergeant William W Rousey was wounded on July 3 near Cherbourg but has returned to duty.
Luther E. Adcock of Stamford graduated from Ellington Field in the Air Transport Command and was appointed flight officer with rating of service pilot. He and his wife Jesfie Smith and daughter Mary Helen reside in Stamford. Preston M. McCoy of Glenrose, Texas, formerly Stamford, earned the Distinguished Unit Badge for his China India Burma theater service with the 4th Troop Carrier Squadron, Twelfth Air Force.
Sgt. Leslie G. Vassar Jr. serves with the Mobile Striking Force guarding an Eighth Air Force fighter station in England. His wife Mrs. Ruthie Lee Vassar lives on Route 1, Stamford, Texas. His primary duty is sheet metal work.
2nd Lt. Richard P. Beaver of Refugio has reported for duty at Amarillo Army Air Field in Texas. He is the son of Mr and Mrs P P Beaver.
Leon H. Hahn of Lagerton Texas serves as cook in a P 47 Thunderbolt dive bomber squadron during 19 months overseas in the African Sicilian and Italian campaigns. He is a son of A Hahn. LTC.
Hon Sam Russell of Stephenville will be principal speaker at the Armistice Day program to be held here Saturday morning.
Vernon D. Hart Post No 100 American Legion the Board of City Development and Chamber of Commerce urge Stamford businesses to close Saturday morning November 43 from 10 45 to 11 30 for an Armistice Day program. Stores will resume normal hours after the program and are asked to display American flags.
Ex-service men and women attend a joint banquet at St John’s Methodist Church Saturday at 6 p.m. Tickets cost 1. H G Andrews acts as master of ceremonies. Roles include welcome by C B Smith, group singing led by E O Wedgeworth, and readings by Miss Sarah Smith. A high school trio and a regional hospital band from Camp Barkeley provide music for a 9 p.m. dance at the Roundup building on the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds.
The Jones County local board sent a list of men to Dallas for preinduction examination on October 25. Armistice Day observance will be held Saturday on the Vernon Square post office area with Congressman Sam Russell delivering the address. The event includes a high school band concert, a three gun salute at 11:00, Taps, and a Boys Octet singing My Buddy.
J H Longley 55 died in his sleep at the family home early Saturday. Discovered by his son Bill at 10:50 am. Funeral Sunday 4 pm at Kinney Funeral chapel with Rev L D Hull. burial Highland cemetery. Survived by wife and son, sister Mrs Mary Puryear of Dalton, Ga. Longley and son ran a North Wetherbee street fruit and vegetable market.
Judge Chas E Coombes was principal speaker as a Stamford group gave a return program for the Snyder Lions Club Tuesday. E O Wedgeworth of the Chamber of Commerce acted as master of ceremonies and introduced the Stamford visitors.
The Stamford American has been chosen as the official publication for Stamford for the remainder of the fiscal year ending March 31 1945.
In Stamford the general election drew 1 185 votes, Roosevelt ahead nearly four to one. Democrats led with 909 ballots, Republicans 129, Texas Regulars 108, America First 1. east box 964 votes, west box 221. Pickens wins Democratic bid for 125th district. Amendments on pensions and county tax reallocation pass with narrow margins.
Otis Vance the pharmacist and Perry Stiegler the funeral director spoke on their careers at the Rotary Club event. K. K. Francis led the program and introduced the speakers. Stiegler outlined licensing steps for ambulance driving, funeral directing and embalming while Vance reviewed pharmaceutics history and current regulations. Rev. Miles B. Hays chaired as president was absent. A transportation committee was named to move the High School pep squad and band to the Anson football game Friday night.
The First Baptist Church announces a Buckner Orphans Home offering starting November 12 at Dallas. Members are asked to give on Sunday morning with offerings received through November 19. Reverend Miles B. Hays leads the drive.
A. M. G. Swenson and A. C. Humphrey report a successful United War Chest drive in Jones County and the Stamford area. The Stamford section quota was 5575 dollars and all ten Stamford communities met or exceeded it. The county-wide goal of 11604 dollars had already been surpassed by midweek. final county count pending.
The Barrow Funeral Home chapel is being enlarged and redecorated this week. Floor space roughly doubles to seat about 125, with dedicated areas for piano, choir, pallbearers, flower girls, and the family. Interior refinishing is in white. W. N. Kinney leads the project.
Annette Carothers, daughter of Mr and Mrs G C Carothers, has entered Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Stamford travels to Anson to meet the undefeated Tigers in a pivotal district game. Seymour and Stamford remain unbeaten after Seymour edged Anson 6 0 last Friday. Albany beat Haskell 13 6 at Albany and Hamlin routed Munday 4 0. Conference standings show Stamford and Seymour atop the table with 4 0 records. Anson and Albany close behind.
The Oliver Street school PTA will meet at the school and the Reynolds Street High School PTA will meet in the high school auditorium on Wednesday, November 15 at 4 o clock.
Rain recorded 0.96 inches Monday night, providing moisture to halt cotton gathering for several days in the area.
Sergeant Elbert Meeker of Stamford reports from Germany and recalls Paris as a beautiful city in a letter to his sister Miss Lucille Meeker of Big Spring. He mentions his location and experiences while on duty overseas.
Roosevelt secures a fourth term while Senator Harry S Truman is elected vice president in a sweeping Democratic victory. Democrats gain control of both houses with 25 states and 413 electoral votes for Roosevelt Truman. 15 states and 118 votes for Dewey Bricker. Texas shows a huge Democratic lead with over 610 thousand votes for Roosevelt. Constitutional amendments pass by large margins.
Lueders Pirates clinched the District 2B championship by routing Rochester 44 0. Weinert upset Aspermont 19 12, leaving Lueders two games ahead with one conference game left. Lueders meets Haskell in a non conference tilt at Haskell Thursday night.
The Youth Center will hold an open house Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. at the library building. Mrs. R. E. Hall says all high school students are welcome for games songs and refreshments in a come and go event. Leaders urge donations of croquet sets ping pong tables and balls to outfit the center.
R W Cole Jr 33 of this city died Monday at the family home in Symonds Place after a year of ill health. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Rule with burial in Rule cemetery. Born October 7 1911 in Rule he is survived by wife, two children, four brothers, three sisters, and his parents. Stamford attendees included Mr and Mrs E Yates, Mr and Mrs L M Hardy, Mr and Mrs Hugh Astin, and Mrs Gordon Haynes.
Next of kin of prisoners of war may send cables to Japanese or German captives via Red Cross for 6.60 in emergencies. Miss Ruby Lee Brooks Jones County Red Cross home service chair says cartons for sending care packages to German prisoners and cards for Japanese correspondence are free. Stamford district ministers and lay delegates attend the Northwest Texas conference in Sweetwater where pastor assignments for the coming year will be made. Dr Sam Young leads district reports on benevolences and membership gains. St Johns Church in Stamford plans a War Bond issue and funds for youth activities as the church records a strong financial year.
Scouts from Troop 40 will collect waste paper in the north half of Hamilton Street Saturday morning. Residents north of Stamford should have paper at the curb by 9 a.m. Businesses around the square should place paper in the alley for pickup. Joe Rickard supervises the drive.
