Stenholm Wins 17th District Seat In Texas Vote

Charles W. Stenholm, Stamford farmer and Democratic nominee, wins the 17th District race with about 68 percent of the vote, carrying all 33 counties as Bill Fisher trails. Jones County backs Stenholm, while statewide results show mixed outcomes for governors and senators amid seven of nine amendments approved.

Stamford gin reports first bale of season from Moran cotton

Sam Simmon of Moran delivered 12,180 pounds of seed cotton to Farmer's Coop Gin in Stamford for ginning. Five bales weighed 470 to 560 pounds each, totaling 2,750 pounds, with 4,700 pounds of cotton seed recovered. Harvest in the area lags as frost awaits to kill leaves before picking begins. temperature dipped to 38 degrees, with some spots at 31. Light weekend drizzle added .03 to the yearly total, reaching 2788.

Stamford Council Hears Two Rate Hike Requests

Stamford city council heard two rate increase requests at Friday’s meeting from Centex Cablevision and Lone Star Gas Company. A workshop to discuss Lone Star Gas's request was set for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14 at the Cliff House. Glade Reed said the company seeks to raise residential and commercial gas rates to yield an 8.89 percent return on an adjusted value rate base of 581,807, noting current return is under four percent.

Jones County Voters Face Gas, Cable Rate Hikes and Demolition

The council weighed Lone Star gas rate changes including summer and winter increases plus a $3 monthly residential and $6 monthly commercial minimum. A $20 gas service and other charges were proposed to raise about $8,300 yearly. CableVision seeks an $0.75 raise to $8.25 monthly, effective Jan. 1, 1979. Demolition action on the old hospital building was postponed to Jan. 5. Library board terms were set and bids for a new police car authorized.
