Chest Drive Fund Grows Toward 15000 Goal

By Thursday morning the Commun ity Chest had 10895.37 in cash and pledges with a drive goal of 15000. Travis Bouchett, co chairman, urged workers to submit reports promptly and noted remaining cards would be redistributed to finish the drive. The Jaycees will oversee a clean up campaign to reach the quota.

Bell's Drive In Grocery to Open Saturday Morning

Bell's Drive In Gro cers on the Avoca highway near Orient opens at 7 am Saturday with free coffee and donuts for adults and candy bars for children. Hubert I Bell, with 11 years in groceries, operates the store with Marl Caudle Jim Preeman and the Bell family, promising continuous service and occasional new staff as openings day prizes and a string band entertain the afternoon crowd.

Carter Family Return After Visit to Evant

Mr and Mrs D H Carter return to their home in Evant after a brief visit with Mr Carter's sister Mrs B D Jones and Mr Jones. Mrs Jones spent two weeks with the Carters at Evant and returned to Siam with her. Evant is the Joneses' old home where they were raised. Mr Jones took Mrs Jones to Servant and returned while she remained for a longer visit.

Mother of Local Woman Dies in Oklahoma City

Mrs. J. B. Whitehead of near Tipton Oklahoma died Wednesday in Oklahoma City after a hospital stay. She leaves five daughters and three sons. Funeral services planned for Friday at Tipton. Surviving children include Mrs. John Reese of this city and Mr. and Mrs. Keese with their families.

Election Tuesday Sets Vote On Ten Constitutional Amendments

Voters will decide on ten constitutional amendments on Tuesday November 8. The ballot also includes school board races and other county items. Elvis West underwent an appendicitis operation at Stamford Sanitarium on Wednesday and is progressing well.

Stamford Considers Burleigh Water Plan With Haskell Abilene

City officials heard a Burleigh Reclamation Bureau proposal to unite West Texas towns for domestic water. If joined, costs and location would be set, with March 1 as a costs decision date and January 1, 1991 for detailed figures. Repayment would come from water sales over 40 to 50 years. no free ride. Also notes Stamford resident Mrs. A N Newell had minor surgery at Stamford Sanitarium.

9 215 Bales Ginned Here by Thursday

Stamford cotton gins are swamped after rain with cotton waiting to be ginned. Gins operate day and night to catch up. By noon Thursday a total of 9 215 bales had been ginned.

Mrs. Stanford Dies at Age 80 in Stamford

Mrs. A Q Stanford aged eighty died Tuesday at 9 25 a m in Stamford Sanitarian after a brief illness. Funeral held Wednesday at St Johns Methodist Church with Rev Charles E Fike and Rev K L Lloyd assisting. Burial in Highland cemetery with Kinney Funeral Home in charge. Survivors include husband Chester Stanford two sons Glen and Marvin and two daughters Mrs FE Lloyd and Mrs HL Bosse nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren plus three sisters.

Olver Street Carnival Nets 310 For PTA Event

The Hidloween carnival at Oliver Street School, sponsored by the Oliver Street Parent-Teachers Association, raised about 310 dollars Monday night at the City Auditorium. A Tom Thumb wedding featured children in formal costumes, drawing cheers from a large crowd. Booths included wild animal acts, apple bobbing, fortune telling, and a mothers’ food cafe. Principal S. D. Martin thanked all who contributed and helped make the event a success.

Service Through Music Theme At Stamford Convention

The twenty-fifth annual First District Texas Federation of Music Clubs opened in Stamford on Thursday, November 3, with the theme Service Through Music. Activities run through Saturday include a Sacred Hour broadcast on KDWT, a Friday night program, and a Saturday junior clubs event at St John’s Methodist Church. A festival choir, directed by William E. Mayes, will perform with soloists Eva Jo Upshaw and others as part of a district-wide gathering hosted by Stamford’s Stamford Music Club and Rotan Music Study Club.

Mrs Odell Odell to Speak on Family Life Education at PPA

Mrs Anna Bond Odell, a psychology professor at McMurray College and former state Home and Family Life chair, will present Parent and Family Life Education and a film on sane sex education at the high school auditorium on Wednesday November 16 at 4 15 pm. Meters See $67 Jump in Take After Week One

City meters in operation less than a month show higher collections. Grady Bowdry reports last week's intake reached 494 dollars, up 67 dollars from the prior week, with 411.50 in the first week. He notes only a few slug coins were found.

Poppy Day Window Display At Bryant-Link Co

The Bryant-Link Co window shows a miniature war cemetery with poppies nodding among graves, a wreath, and veteran-made banners. Hart-Masters Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary arranged the display to mark Poppy Day. Volunteers from the Auxiliary and Camp Fire Girls will distribute poppies Saturday to honor war dead and collect welfare contributions.

Pierians Sponsor Art Exhibit Saturday in Stamford

Twenty four West Texas artists from five towns will exhibit at the Pierian Club breakfast exhibit in the home economics cottage Friday morning. Stamford artists include Sarah Inglish McDonald and Mrs L Furrh among others. Abilene participants listed. Rochester and Hamlin contributors named. Mrs Joe Nowlin's pupils interpret southern melodies at the breakfast. The event honors American Art Week and serves as a Pierian club meeting and district Federation of Music Clubs event with themed favors and a southern belle service attire.
