A diploma alone carries no purchasing power or guaranteed education. The speaker recalls three men who achieved or lost fame. success depended on living in the present and acting daily, not resting on past glory. True value comes from learning from others and using those lessons to accompany a diploma. No one is a failure who helps others succeed.
More than 100 Stamford area youths will attend Camp O Da Ko at the Lueders Baptist encampment grounds June 7 to 12. A breakdown shows 119 reservations from Stamford Hamlin Haskell Abilene and two from Fort Worth, according to Mrs. W C Taylor of the Stamford council of Camp Fire Girls.
Sixty five Stamford high school seniors will graduate Tuesday night with L W Johnson presenting diplomas at John’s Methodist church. Rev Marshall Rhew will give the commencement talk titled What is Mine is Ours so I will Share it. Baccalaureate services Sunday at 6 30 p m will feature Rev Jack Southerland on The Secret of Success.
Stamford insured fire losses from January to mid May reached 27 550 with 42 fire calls versus 23 last year. Fire Chief Dick Rowland warns losses could worsen, urges safety checks. inspector finds department well run but hydrant shortage in business and residential areas.
Two get acquainted banquets are planned by the Good Will and Retail Trade committees of the Chamber of Commerce. The first, Friday night, June 5, will honor Humble Oil and Refining Co. employees moving from Avoca. The second, the following Friday, invites Fletcher Oil and Gas Drilling Corp. staff. The gatherings include other new arrivals and invitations go out next week with ticket sales to merchants starting then.
Fire swept through the home of Mr and Mrs M Golden at 1001 East Vanderbilt a few minutes after they left for Sunday services. The blaze started in a bedroom and caused extensive damage to the residence according to fire department records.
Tao Stamford seniors a boy and a girl will each receive 290 scholarships this year as gifts of the Rotary club. Selection has been made but identities will not be revealed until commencement night. The program began a little over a year ago with members paying 25 cents weekly into a fund. With 60 plus members in the club, a reserve will accumulate each year to support the program. A committee including Rev Jack Southerland Cleburne Huston Jack Watson L W Johnson and Jim McCulloch chose recipients on scholarship citizenship character and need. Athletic scholarships were not considered nor were students who would not need aid to attend college. A certificate will be presented Tuesday night and money paid when the student enters college.
Decoration Day this year in Stamford will not be a holiday nor marked by formal observances. A Buddy Poppy sale will occur downtown. VEW and Auxiliary will decorate veterans graves. Next year a banquet will honor veterans Gold Star Mothers and widows of service members.
Stamford civic leaders pressed immediate action to widen highways 380 toward Leeders and 277 toward Anson. A C Humphrey urged county to start buying right of way as state highway department approved widenings. Bonds may be needed. district already authorized 60000 for right of way on highway 92.
Mayor W B Harrison designates May 30 in Stamford as Buddy Poppy Day. The VFW auxiliary and Camp Fire Girls will sell the red flowers to aid veterans and widows, with Cecil McCafferty noting proceeds support those in need. The proclamation urges residents to wear a Buddy Poppy to show gratitude to servicemen.
County Judge H. G. Andrews Jr said the plan includes purchasing right of way and improving highways 277 to Anson and 380 to Lueders with costs probably running in excess of 240000.
Mrs. B P Davenport 84 longtime Stamford resident died Wednesday night at Stamford Sanitarium after frail health. Funeral Friday at 3 pm at St Johns Methodist Church with Rev Newton Starnes and Dr O P Clarke officiating. Burial in Highland Cemetery. She was born Eva Horsh in Roswell Georgia July 28 1874 and married to a West Texas attorney December 20 1891. She leaves a daughter Mrs A S Hawes Abilene and a son B P Davenport Jr Stamford with three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Stam ford grain dealers expect a big wheat buying period next week if weather cooperates. Fred Taylor estimates 12 to 15 bushels per acre on average, with 60 000 to 70 000 pounds purchased this week amid green wheat. Cecil Eager reports some loads averaging 27 to 28 bushels and others six to seven. Jess Mickler cites 300 000 pounds bought, with yields from seven to 30. Dealers say a clearer picture will emerge after next week’s peak harvest.
Caleb Hildebrand a junior ministerial student at McMurry College Abilene has been chosen as youth director at St. John's Methodist church He will serve full time during the summer and part time during the fall school term.
Milton Dudensing unloads 1959 wheat at the Old Glory elevator per manager Buster Fredemeyer. Delos Callicoatte near Old Glory harvested 15 acres at 26 bushels per acre. Area expects yields mainly eight to 12 bushels.
