Suits Seek 111000 in Delinquent School Taxes

Delinquent tax suits totaling 5518.97 in taxes plus 6108.12 penalties and interest were filed in 104th District Court at Anson by Jack McCreary for the Stamford County Independent School District. The action names 90 defendants including individuals firms and a city interest and covers land in Stamford subdivisions with several names listed. The city of Stamford is joined and similar city tax suits proceed.

Poppy Sale Saturday Veterans Honor War Dead

The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary plan their annual Buddy Poppy Sale on Saturday May 28. Proceeds from each 1000 poppies fund rehabilitation programs for disabled veterans at veterans hospitals.

New Ag Teacher Named at Avoca

Thomas Don Welch a January graduate in agriculture from Texas Tech will teach vocational agriculture at Avoca for 1966 1967 term Welch replaces Bill Davis who moves to Fort Worth to work with the Texas Angus Association He is a Crowell High School and FFA member who also played football and ran track He was listed in Who's Who in Agriculture and a Lone Star Farmer He attended West Texas State College for one year before Texas Tech where he joined the FFA chapter and Aggie Club Welch is single and completed practice teaching at Quanah V A Hospitals Net proceeds from the sale are used for local relief On Memorial Day May 30 the U S Flag will be flown at the Memorial Plot in Highland Cemetery for veterans buried there Small flags will be placed on graves at several cemeteries Monday is an approved holiday for the city and many businesses will close

Cotton Queen Contest Entry Deadline Set for May 28

Entries for the Stamford Cotton Queen Contest close at midnight May 28. The event, at 8 p.m. June 3 in Stamford High School auditorium, advances eliminations for the Texas Cotton Queen Contest. Open to junior and senior girls in 1965-66, unmarried. Stamford also hosts a Miss Cotton Pixie contest for girls six and under by Sept. 1, 1966. Sponsored by Stamford Retail Trade Committee with Rolling Plains Cotton Growers, Inc. Entry blanks are in the Stamford American and must be submitted to the chamber of commerce office.

Southside Lions To Give Away Stereo Radio

The Southside Lions Club of Stamford sponsors a stereo radio drawing on July 4 at 4 pm at Longley's Drive-In Grocery. Tickets cost $1 and winners need not be present. Proceeds support the club welfare fund and the stereo is displayed at Stamford businesses weekly before the drawing.

Rabies Vaccination Day Set In Stamford

Dr. David Ballard will administer rabies shots at Stamford City Hall on Saturday from 10 to 12 a.m. The event follows a city ordinance requiring dog vaccination for rabies.

Stamford City Council weighs FAA funds and master plan

The Stamford City Council discussed applying for FAA funds for airport improvements. A Dallas firm offered a city growth master plan, with the city handling planning and the firm supervising the manual work over about 18 months. The council also heard a request to sell 187 acres of Lake Stamford land, noting bids from multiple bidders would be required and the city would not be eager to sell.

Insect Survey Team To Begin Work In County

A two man team will survey twenty eight Jones County cotton fields for boll weevil and other insects starting June 1. The effort is part of the Rolling Plains Cotton Growers program with Texas A&M University Extension Service and will operate from Anson with the county agent.

Merchants Draw June 4 Prize List Nearing Complete

Stamford merchants sponsor a drawing at 5 p m on June 4 on the square during Bargain Days. 51 businesses offer registration forms and a nearly finished prize list includes items from Penney's Webb's McDonald's Hassen's and more. A sidewalk cotton promotion sale runs June 3 and 4 with a Stamford Cotton Queen contest at 8 p m June 3 at the high school auditorium.
