Mrs. Edgar Ellis is named hostess and Miss Louise Livengood sponsor for the 1950 Texas Cowboy Reunion. Directors announced plans to entertain sponsor representatives from towns ranches and organizations at the event.
Dr. Harold G. Cooke, president of McMurry College, will speak at Stamford High School’s graduation exercises at First Baptist Church on Tuesday night May 30. He will address the question To Whom are we in Debt. The ceremony is set for Sunday night May 28 at St. John’s Methodist Church.
Bill McDaniel of Dallas Texas Jaycees spoke at a Stamford Country Club ladies night banquet introduced by James Lindsey. Corsages were given, buffet meal served, invocation by Joseph High, and dancing followed. McDaniel, honored for a year as state officer, later scheduled visits to Hamlin Stamford Botany Snyder Abilene for Jaycees events with Jim Brown.
Stamford Future Farmers members hosted FHA girls for a hay ride and weiner roast on Tuesday night May 9. They gathered at the Agricultural building at 5 30 P M, rode a prairie hay filled truck from Bill Jackson, then went to Swede Park for an evening of fun. Gerald Proctor and Mrs H K Langford along with Miss Ethel Rowell served as sponsors.
The VFW marks Buddy Poppy Day on Saturday May 27 in Stamford. Commander BR. 1 Sally Webb of VEW Post 9179 says funds from poppy sales aid needy and disabled veterans, war orphans, war widows, and help with hospitalization and other benefits. Poppy chairmen Mrs HilL Brigham and Mrs J M Terry, assisted by others, will run the downtown sale. The drive emphasizes veteran rehabilitation and calls Stamford residents to contribute.
Former Baylor University professor Case March campaigned in Amford on Tuesday driving his House on Wheels campaign truck. He seeks the Texas governor's office and spoke to local residents about his platform.
Rotarians will clash with Exchangites in a baseball softball fast pitch game at Wendeborn field Thursday night. Rain forced a postponement. proceeds go to youth activities of both clubs in a battle of the year billed with light humor about Stamford Sanitarium.
Mrs. W. T. West hosted Mother's Day with ten children in attendance plus many in laws and grandchildren. Guests included Jay West, Guilletts, Billy Wests, Caf ley and family, Thompsons from Stamford, Wests from Bridgeport, Terrells of Paint Creek and Stamford, Wests from Fort Stockton and Lamesa, and others from Goree Rule Abilene and Dallas for church services at the First Baptist.
Stamford high school observed senior day on Friday May 12 with a special program at the assembly and a holiday for the remainder of the day. Seniors wore class colors navy blue and white with white dresses for the girls and corsages of blue and white carnations, while the boys wore white shirts and dark trousers.
Four members of the Stamford Garden Club will attend the Texas Garden Clubs Inc state convention in Tyler on May 18 and 20. Mrs W C Windson is state president, with Mrs Hugh Astin as delegate and Mrs J B Pumphrey as alternate. Additional attendees include Mrs Mattie Haynes and Mrs L F Metz. Kay England and her parents have returned to Wadley Ga after visiting Stamford members.
Mrs S G Young, patient at Hendrick Memorial hospital, Abi lene, is showing some improvement though she remains in isolation.
Mrs. Crockett Appling was installed as president of the Junior Senior High School PTA at the auditorium. She was introduced by Mrs. George Pryor with retiring president Mrs. Dave Walker conducting the ceremony. New officers include Mrs. Bill McClellan as vice president and ies Weaver Medlin as secretary treasurer.
Ben Ramsey of San Augustine formally announces his bid for lieutenant governor of Texas after resigning as secretary of state. A longtime legislator and former Senate president pro tempore he has led rural electrification work with the Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative and returns to private law practice in San Augustine.
Rev Charles E B Fike will deliver the morning sermon on Religion of Power at St John s Methodist church with the evening service at 7 30 broadcast. The subject will be Living Without Pear. The Summers family will travel to the Paiis on Thursday and Meadow Friday for granddaughter Deorotha Pawl Summers teaching at the school there. The school closes this weekend.
The Paint Creek FHA Chapter met Monday at the Home Economics Cottage to elect officers for the summer and plan projects. Officers elected: president Gregory Flores, vice president Nell Hianson, secretary Shirlene Tidwell, parliamentarian Margaret Houston, reporter Geraldine Tidwell. The retiring officers were Margaret Houston Sue Bouldin Geraldine Tidwell Shirlene Tidwell Shirley Tidwell. Lorine Jarman is song leader. Most members plan sewing leather craft or Dresden works. Raymond Austin of Bisbee Arizona is visiting relatives here with his wife and baby. the family plans to move here.
Local forecasts expect Stamford area wheat to yield about 10 bushels per acre with harvest planned to begin June 1 or 2. Some fields may reach 15 bushels. heavy rains improved grain but drought earlier delayed gathering. oats acreage rises with expected good yields while overall wheat output may match last year despite fewer acres.
W C Ribble professor of economics at Tarwin Simmons University Abilene told the Rotary club the Rotary Foundation promotes international understanding. The fund grew from 18 students in 1947-48 to 85 this year with 37 from the United States, representing 24 countries studying in 23 nations. He urged a new diplomacy to counter Communism and stressed the future peace of the world rests with these scholars.
Stamford shows a dramatic rise in retail sales from 1939 to 1948, climbing from 5.7 million to 19.4 million dollars. Census Bureau figures also note Abilene and Taylor County gains, while wholesalers increase from 14.6 million to 72.5 million dollars.
Family of Mrs. J. P. Griggs held their Mothers Day reunion Sunday at Charles Griggs home in Sweet Water. Guests traveled from Stamford Lubbock Junction and other towns as several relatives attended with grandchildren and in laws. The gathering accompanied Stamford high school graduation events and visits from Osbornes relatives in Clarksville Indiana plus travels from Lamesa and Fort Worth.
About 50 ministers and 250 delegates will gather May 24 at First Church Big Spring for the Methodist Northwest Texas Conference. Bishop William C. Martin will preside with host churches Park Place Wesley Memorial and First Church. Several local pastors and lay leaders are named as attendees and delegates. Appointment of ministers will be announced May 28 with Rev. Charles Fike likely returning to St. John's.
Mr and Mrs J H Blue and son Tames are moving to Waco where they will live in a purchased home. Mr Blue will return to Baylor University for his masters degree and later pursue administrative school work. Both have been civic leaders and active in church work. Mr Blue sold his interest in Modern Food Store to Jack Fuqua.
The Lindsey Electric Secrive shop at 216 W McHarg in Stamford will hold an all day open house on Saturday May 19 to celebrate the new store opening. Attendees can win door prizes during the event.
Elmer F E Henning and his 17 year old son Truett produced the first wheat of the 1950 season sold at Olney on Tuesday. They also combined the first 1948 49 wheat. The crop was cut from about four acres and tested above 15 percent moisture content.
Stamford All Stars defeated Weinert All Stars 7 to 1 in game one at Wendeborn Field with KE W Mickler pitching. Roy Weeks followed with a 4 to 1 win in game two. Irvin Overton hit the only homer of the day. The All Stars host Abilene Christian College at Wendeborn Field Saturday night and an Exchange Club versus Rotary Club game is set there Thursday night.
The Wesleyan Service Guild met at St John s Methodist church on May 15 with sixteen members and two guests. Mrs E B Kinard presided and announced Dr Elizabeth Martin as new president replacing Kinard and elected officers for the coming year including Addie Mae Kennedy as vice president and BB Gay as recording secretary.
